“Transcendence” tells the story of Will Caster, a scientist who specializes in artificial intelligence, as he struggles to create a sentient computer system that encompasses all of human knowledge and then some. The voiceover from the trailer describes the singularity event (or transcendence) when computer intelligence surpasses that of its human creators.
Caster’s research into artificial intelligence brings him fame, but it also welcomes enemies. Eventually, his search for knowledge leads him down a dark path, of which we get a preview in the trailer’s final image, a sickly looking Depp who appears to have merged with the computer.
For his directorial debut, Pfister has enlisted a few Nolan regulars for the cast, including Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy and Rebecca Hall, who plays Caster’s wife. Work on “Transcendence” kept Pfister from shooting “Interstellar,” which will be Christopher Nolan’s first movie with his trusted cinematographer since “Following,” his feature debut.
“Transcendence” opens in theaters on April 18, 2014.
