Sunscreen And No Sleazy Friends: 2014 Hangout Fest Bands Share Their Beach Survival Tips

OutKast, the Black Keys, the Killers and a whole lot more will hit the beach for the 2014 Hangout Music Festival, set for May 16-18 in Gulf Shores, Alabama … and they’re already preparing themselves for all that sun and surf.

See, because it takes place literally feet from the Gulf of Mexico, Hangout is a fest unlike any other; and if you’re planning on making the trip down to the Shores (tickets go on sale Thursday at 10 a.m. ET!), you should plan accordingly. After all, even though we’re still five months away from this year’s Hangout, it’s never too early to get ready.

So, to help you prepare for the sun-soaked excellence, we asked some of this year’s Hangout bands for some summertime survival tips. Here are the essentials they’re packing, plus some handy “Do’s and Don’ts” for maximium beachitude.

“Don’t buy any dodgy counterfeit sunglasses on the beach, they’ll open your irises more, but they won’t give you any UV protection. You’ll be blind,” Bastille‘s Chris Wood laughed. “Do bring a towel, do bring suncream, and do bring beer … but drink responsibly, of course.”

“Well, I’m Irish, so a definite ‘Don’t’ is ‘Don’t forget your sunscreen,'” Fitz and the Tantrums frontman Michael Fitzpatrick said.

“Don’t bring your sleazy guy friends if you want to hook your girlfriends up with people,” singer Noelle Scaggs added.

Solid advice, indeed … and while sunscreen and a lack of sleazy friends are certainly important, it seems like folks are divided when it comes to one key issue: whether or not covering up is key.

“Don’t dress too much, because it’s going to be hot,” Zedd said.

“We did go to the beach in Cornwall in our clothes before a gig once,” the 1975‘s George Daniel added. “I think I was wearing leather trousers. We were on tour, we had no other clothes, we wanted to go to a beach!”

“Our black clothes are not representative of how sinister we are,” frontman Matt Healy laughed. “I do like outside, I do go outside sometimes, I don’t take an umbrella. I was on the beach in this outfit.”

And then, there are some bands who genuinely have no idea what they’ll be bringing to the beach … mostly because they’ve never had to think about playing a fest like Hangout.

“I’ve never been to a beach party before,” Portugal. The Man singer John Gourley said. “We have gravel-pit parties in Alaska.”
