Katy Perry has a lot to say on her next album. And, she’s not afraid to say it.
The singer opened up to U.K.’s OK! magazine about her next album, sharing that she is drawing inspiration from her real life ups and downs for her follow-up to 2010’s massive Teenage Dream.
“Maybe I’m not specific with names, but that’s my lockbox where all my secrets go. Writing is like therapy. [My songs] stem from the truth inside of me,” she says in the issue, Press Party reports. “I just want songs to be relatable, and to be adopted as someone else’s soundtrack.”
In the nearly three years since she dropped Dream, Perry certainly has a lot of personal events to draw inspiration from, including her divorce from Russell Brand and her split from John Mayer. But, fans will have to listen for lyrical clues if they want to try and identify the muses.
Previously Perry confirmed that for the release she’d be working with the usual suspects, including Max Martin, Dr. Luke, Greg Wells and Bonnie McKee. She also enlisted the help of Sia, who has penned hits for Rihanna and Ne-Yo as well as appeared on hooks for David Guetta and Flo Rida.
The “California Gurls” singer has described the release as “schizophrenic” and noted that she’s about halfway through recording the album, but didn’t offer any insight as to when new music might debut. And while fans will have to wait a little longer to hear what this new era for Perry sounds like, she’s teased fans with clues here and there as to what she’s listening to during the recording process.
“You know the 90’s are back when you’re voluntarily putting record scratches in your songs a la Portishead’s Dummy,” she tweeted back in April.
In June of last year, Perry was already thinking about this forthcoming album release, noting that after taking some time off, she’d be looking to Madonna for some musical inspiration. She added, “It will be a much darker album than the previous one. It was inevitable, after what I went through. If I had a time machine and could go back in time, I would. But I can’t, so you’ll discover another part of me.”
