It’s safe to assume that the year she wrote “Royals,” 17-year-old phenom Lorde watched the Grammys on TV at home with her parents in New Zealand.
But this year the four-time nominee is not only attending her first Grammys, she’s performing on the show alongside some of music’s biggest names. How does the publicity-shy singer feel about the sudden spotlight?

“I do not want to get my hopes up in any way, but I would be pretty psyched to win a Grammy,” she told the Hollywood Reporter of her first trip to the big show. “I’m excited for everything that will go along with the day — seeing a bunch of my friends, dressing up, performing will be really fun. … It sounds like prom on ‘roids or something.”
What else did we learn about Lorde from the Reporter chat?
Kanye’s Late Registration Changed Her Life
“I remember staying up and listening to that on repeat,” she said of ‘Ye’s second studio album. “There a lot of people whose careers I really admire and the kind of common specter amongst them were that they all had a good idea of who they were and where they wanted to go, which I admire.”

“It has been quite weird,” she said of her rise from obscurity to Grammy noms for Record and Song of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Pop Solo Performance. “I never saw myself as a top 40 princess.”
What Is It About New Zealand?
Maybe there’s something in the water, but for the second year in a row an artist from NZ is making huge noise at the Grammys. Last year it was Gotye and this year it’s Lorde’s turn. “I think a big part of it is that we are at the bottom end of the world and it’s that desire to get out and get noticed,” she said. “Like it’s the fact that there’s this possibility of being limited by geography that makes no one want to be limited by geography. It was definitely a driving factor for me — wanting to be in the thick of it.”
Why Does She Move That Way?
“
Though Lorde hasn’t done a ton of live performances in the U.S., when she does take the stage people always seem to comment on her, well, eccentric, movement. What’s that all about?
“To be honest, it’s just the way the music manifests itself in my body,” she explained. “I have no control over it and I watch it back and I almost feel embarrassed because I think it looks really weird. But have you seen Talking Heads’ ‘Stop Making Sense?’ Have you seen how David Byrne moves? You know that it’s not put on.”
