It’s official: Vision is a part of “The Avengers: Age of Ultron,” and he’ll be played by someone with plenty of experience in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Paul Bettany, the voice of Tony Stark’s J.A.R.V.I.S. A.I. system in all three “Iron Man” movies and even the first “Avengers” film, has joined the cast of “Age of Ultron” as Vision, an android hero with a celebrated history in Marvel Comics lore. The Daily Mail was first with the news, having spotted Bettany and Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner at Shepperton Studios near London this week.
“They did a series of costume, hair and make-up tests and worked with stuntmen and armorers,” reports The Daily Mail. “Make-up experts were using various powders and potions on Bettany’s skin to bring about the Vision’s chalk-white complexion.”
Vision becomes the latest superhero to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it’s a character that fans have wanted and theorized about for years. For a time, the popular theory pegged late S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson as the model for Vision, as a way of bringing Clark Gregg back into the big-screen Marvel mix. That theory was busted by Gregg and others, as well as by Gregg’s participation on “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” for ABC and Marvel TV.
But it appears that fans were onto something, insofar as Vision taking his cues from a preexisting Marvel Cinematic Universe entity. Indeed, Bettany’s casting as Vision only makes the wheels spin further.
In the comics, Ultron is created by Ant-Man scientist Hank Pym; Ultron later creates Vision as a way of seeking revenge against Pym. It’s been confirmed that Pym is not Ultron’s maker in the “Avengers” film. That role is likely to go to Tony Stark. If Stark is Ultron’s creator, it makes a lot of sense for Ultron to use J.A.R.V.I.S. as a template for Vision, as a way to hit Tony where it hurts the most.
That’s just speculation for now, but Bettany as Vision seems like a done deal. Is it 2015 yet?
“The Avengers: Age of Ultron” hits theaters on May 1, 2015.
