A trio of ’80s remakes sought to win the weekend, but a movie whose toy blocks date back to 1932 emerged victorious.
set a new President’s Day Weekend record, grabbing $63.5 million over the four-day holiday. That kept the family friendly comedy in the #1 spot for a second consecutive weekend, bringing its domestic total to $143.8 million. It was another big weekend for main voice actor Chris Pratt, whose forthcoming Marvel epic “Guardians of the Galaxy” continued to build buzz (the first trailer premiered Tuesday) and new action figures at Toy Fair.
Kevin Hart is having a great run, as well. He’s featured prominently in “About Last Night,” which had the biggest opening for a romantic comedy since 2012’s “About Last Night” made $28.4 million through Monday. Hart’s team-up with Ice Cube, “Ride Along,” remained in the Top 10 for a fifth week, putting the domestic total for the action comedy at $116 million.
“About Last Night” wasn’t the only ’80s remake new in theaters. opened midweek, winding up in third place for the weekend. Sony spent a reported $100 million on the violent sci-fi action satire, which has already earned exactly that amount around the world ($30 million of that domestically). The original “RoboCop” made $54.3 million during its theatrical run from about 1,600 theaters. Adjusted for inflation, that amount would be about $115 million in 2014.

opened in fifth place with $13.2 million, most of which came in over Valentine’s Day.
And unfortunately for Colin Farrell, the badly reviewed “Winter’s Tale” bombed over the weekend with an $8 million debut.
