Vic Mensa Has A ‘Powerful’ Recipe For His Next Album

Vic Mensa is readying his next project, but don’t call it a mixtape.

“I’m definitely working on a new album. I’m not gonna drop the details on the name or anything yet, but I got a lot of records that I’m working on. It’s by far my most powerful and strongest music,” the rising Chicago rap star told “RapFix Live” host Sway Calloway on Wednesday when he appeared on the show.

Mensa’s last project, 2013’s INNANETAPE featured all original production from notables like Hit-Boy, Boi-1da, Christian Rich and DJ Dahi. Singles like the soulful “Orange Soda” have helped to establish Mensa as a lyricist, and since the album’s release he has hit the road with J. Cole, Wale, Disclosure and has upcoming European dates with Danny Brown. Even with all that he has going on, Vic has managed to make a dent in his next LP. “I just been staying focused on it, even with all of the traveling and transit that I’ve been in. Just staying creative and working on it as much as I can,” he said.

Mensa confirms that he’ll drop singles and have a number of features ahead of the new album, but there won’t be a mixtape coming — and for good reason.

“I don’t really know about the term mixtape in 2014, mixtapes to me are like Lil Wayne rapping over everybody’s beats,” he said, making a distinction between his specific brand of music. “Everything I do is all over original production.”
