‘Lego Movie’ Sequel: It’s Happening

The is stacking up to be an unbreakable franchise.

After Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s big-screen recreation of the childhood toy crushed the President’s Day box-office record, Warner Bros. confirmed to MTV News on Friday (February 21) that a second LEGO movie will be released on May 26, 2017.

There’s no word yet on who will be returning for round two. (“The Lego Movie” boasts an A-list cast including Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett and Alison Brie.)

But we’d be surprised if they didn’t want more LEGO: On top of raking in $69.1 million at the box office in its first weekend, the animated tale has also gotten thumbs-up across the board from critics, a rarity for toy-based films. (Sorry, “G.I. Joe.”) The film had a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes with critics praising the “insane level of invention” animation-wise and its heartwarming yet irreverent storyline.

So, where could a sequel take us? We’ve already conjured up some possibilities — an Iron Man appearance? A trip to the Bionicle world? — but it’s a bit early for that. There’s still 1,189 days left until we’ll get to see Emmett and Lucy back on the big screen. Till then, we’ll just be putting together the 2,471-piece “Metal Beard’s Sea Cow” LEGO set.
