‘The Voice’ Recap: Usher Pulls The Bieber Card… And It Works

The blind auditions were well underway on “The Voice” Tuesday night (February 25), and the talent, entertainment and humorous banter between Adam Levine, Shakira, Usher, and Blake Shelton showed no signs of slowing down any time soon.

There was surely no shortage of bribery, mockery, and downright ruthless jabs by the four coaches as they continued to vie for the contestants they want.

The ‘Bieber’ Card Comes Out
16-year-old Madilyn Paige’s stripped-down rendition of David Guetta’s “Titanium” allowed for her angelic and smooth voice to power through, and immediately got the attention of Usher and Shakira. The two coaches got into a heated battle as they tried to prove why they would be the best choice for Paige. It got so intense that Levine ran to be by Shelton’s side to watch the match — all that was missing was the popcorn. In the end, it was Usher and perhaps his sly remark about working with a well-known teenager that got the young contestant’s attention.

Down To The Last Second
When Massachusetts native Noah Lis, 22, stepped on stage to sing “Me and Mrs. Jones,” it was clear that he would be a unique contestant. Inspired by his grandfather and Frank Sinatra, the old-soul-trapped-in-a-young-body showed off his smooth and soothing voice, but it was starting to look grim for him as his 90-second audition came to a close. As Lis hit the last note of his song, undoubtedly fearing the worst, both Levine and Shelton hit their buttons and turned their chairs. He landed himself a spot on team Blake.

True Colors Of A Young Rising Star
16-year-old Texas native Deja Hall said she was used to the odds being stacked against her, and she was ready to prove the people who underestimate her wrong. Her smooth voice got three of the four judges to turn their chairs; Shakira was so excited, in fact, she missed her button the first time. Although Shelton reminded the teen that he had previously won with a 16-year-old, Hall chose to be on Team Shakira.

Big, Red, Musical Chairs
The last contestant to hit the blind audition stage was 28-year-old country girl Cary Laine. The Alabama native crooned an energetic and passionate rendition of The Band Perry’s “Better Dig Two” that resonated with all four of the coaches — and that’s when the ruthlessness began. “Have a seat in my big, red, leather chair,” Adam charmingly offered the hopeful as a jealous Usher looked on. As the other coaches started a Goldilocks-style chair movement with Laine, and Usher seduced her with a “Look at my lips,” it seemed as though Levine’s plan may have backfired. But in the end, Laine chose to take a chance with her country-at-heart style, and landed herself on Team Adam.

The end of night two saw Levine fill another two slots on his team, while the other three coaches bagged one.
