Phillip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his New York City apartment on February 2, and a coroner has now confirmed that the 46-year-old actor overdosed on a mix of heroin and several other drugs.
According to AP, on Friday (February 28), a spokeswoman for the New York City medical examiner revealed that the Oscar-winner died after ingesting a round of drugs that included heroin, cocaine, amphetamines, and psychoactive drugs called benzodiazepines.
Hoffman was discovered in his bathroom with a needle in his arm, and police officials reportedly found nearly 50 envelopes of heroin in the apartment.
Family and friends, including Meryl Streep, Louis C.K. and Cate Blanchett said their last goodbyes to the accomplished actor and father of three, during a private funeral that was held in New York City on February 7.
Hoffman has starred in numerous critically-acclaimed films, from “Boogie Nights” and “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” to “Capote” and “The Master.” He recently starred as Plutarch Heavensbee in “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” and he’s still set to appear in the final installation of the blockbuster trilogy.
“Words cannot convey the devastating loss we are all feeling right now,” the cast and crew of “The Hunger Games” said in a statement after Hoffman’s sudden death. “Philip was a wonderful person and an exceptional talent, and our hearts are breaking. Our deepest thoughts and condolences go out to his family.”
