The Oscars are all about pomp, circumstance and jokes about Liza Minnelli, but among all the glitz and glam tonight Karen O. and Ezra Koenig’s performance of “The Moon Song” from “Her” shone through like, well, the moon itself.
A brief whisper of a performance, Karen O. and Koenig took the stage in front of a moon backdrop, sitting side by side and strumming out the Oscar-nominated jam. Koenig wielded an acoustic guitar, and Karen O. crooned in a flowing red dress, silver shoes sitting beside her on the stage.
The simplicity of the scene echoed perfectly its appearance in “Her,” a scene in which Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) fiddles with a uke in a snowy cabin while Samantha (Scarlett Johansson) composes the song on a whim.
“The Moon Song” is nominated for Best Original Song, facing off against the likes of Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” from “Despicable Me 2” and “Let It Go” from “Frozen.”
Although Karen O. and Koenig’s performance was striking, it wasn’t the first time the Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman performed the song with an able partner. She previously busted out the jam with “Her” director Spike Jonze, who also contributed to the lyrics.
