There’s a new Rihanna song on the Interwebs, but it’s not by Rihanna. Sia originally penned the track “Chandelier” for the likes of Ri, but, in the end, she decided to keep it for herself.
“I usually think, ‘Oh this would work for Rihanna, or this would be a good one for B or Katy,'” Sia told “On Air with Ryan Seacrest.” “But this time I was like, ‘Uh oh I think I just wrote a full-blown pop song for myself by accident!'”
“My friend Jesse Shatkin and I were jamming in the studio — I was playing piano and him on the marimba — and this gem popped out,” she said.
The track is a kind of sad, modern-day Gatsby jam about the glitter and fatigue of a party girl’s life, capped off with Sia’s soaring refrain: “I’m gonna swing from the chandelier.”
The song is Sia’s first original track since 2010′s We Are Born, although she did contribute a song to “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” soundtrack last year with Diplo and The Weeknd.
I, for one, hope that this new song heralds new music from the singer-songwriter, a prolific talent who has been penning songs since the ’90s for the likes of Rihanna, Christina Aguilera and Flo Rida.
“She’s been incredible for a long time,” collaborator Ne-yo told MTV News last year of Sia. “Her mastery of melody, from just the way that she works, her words and phrases, it’s been incredible. And people are just now catching on! Y’all are late; everybody’s late. It’s been that way.”
