Third Victim Dies After Tragic SXSW Accident

A third person reportedly died on Monday (March 17) after the tragic collision outside a Tyler, the Creator show at the SXSW Music Festival early Thursday morning.

Authorities in Austin, Texas, identified the victim as 26-year-old Sandy Thuy Le, according to CNN. Her family was by her side when she died at an Austin hospital.

Shortly after midnight on Thursday morning, a man local police later identified as 22-year-old Rashad Charjuan Owens allegedly drove his carinto a crowd of fans outside the Mohawk club, where they were waiting for a showcase featuring the Odd Future rapper to begin.

Two people, 35-year-old Netherlands native Steven Craenmehr and a woman from Austin, were pronounced dead at the scene. Twenty-three more were injured, with five in critical condition.

Owens was taken into custody Thursday afternoon. Police Chief Art Acevedo, who described the incident as an “intentional act,” told reporters at the time that he faces two capital murder charges and 23 aggravated assault counts.

Organizers released a statement about the tragic incident later that day. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by the tragic accident that took place last night here in Austin,” it read. “We appreciate and commend the first responders, as well as the city agencies who so quickly sprung into action. We will be making schedule and venue changes for programming in the surrounding area of last night’s events. All other programming will continue as previously scheduled.”
