Of course, as is the case with all good democracies, the best vote is an informed voter. Which is why, all week, we’ll be breaking down key #MMM matchups in our four regions, beginning today with the Mighty Midwest, home tournament-tested vets, underdog acts looking to score the upset, and, uh, the lead singer of Evanescence. Let’s take a look at the bands fighting for a spot in the Final Four!

The #1 seed in the Midwest went to Fall Out Boy, who made a triumphant return in 2013, and might very well be the band to beat this year. They proved to be skilled sh–talkers with a deep run in last year’s tournament, and, after one day of voting, it looks like history will repeat itself, as they’re currently destroying #16 St. Vincent.

Assuming those numbers hold, Fall Out Boy will take on the winner of #8 Grouplove vs. #9 Bleachers in round two, and right now, that one’s too close to call. After Fun.’s run in the 2013 tournament ended in the Sweet 16, Jack Antonoff is looking to go even further with Bleachers, though outdueling Fall Out Boy is gonna be a tall order.

The top half of the Midwest radial is filled out with a pair of matchups that pit #MMM mainstays against first-timers with something to prove. #4 Blink-182, who have been a part of the tournament since year one, take on upset-minded #13 Sleeping With Sirens, and #5 the Fray go to war with #12 Taking Back Sunday. Right now, the veterans have the upper hand in both battles, though TBS have taken initiative and are quickly closing the gap. We wouldn’t be surprised to see them pull off the upset here.

Speaking of upsets, the Midwest’s #2 seed, OneRepublic, are on watch, trailing #15 Amy Lee by double digits.Evanescence have dominated the tournament in the past, and their frontwoman looks to continue that trend in 2014. If she holds on to the lead, Lee will battle the winner of #7 Queens of the Stone Age vs. #10 5 Seconds of Summer in the second round … and let’s just go ahead and call this one for the 5SOS guys now, as they’re blasting QOTSA by a huge margin.

The bottom half of the Midwest region also features last year’s #MMM Cinderellas, #3 Walk The Moon, who made it all the way to the 2013 Final Four and currently lead #13 U2 by a large amount. It won’t get any easier for them in the second round, as they’ll take on another titan of rock: either #6 the Killers or #11 Nine Inch Nails, though after one day of voting, it’s looking like it’ll be the guys from Las Vegas, as they’ve got a massive lead over NIN.

Of course, as history has shown, there are no sure things in #MMM, and there’s plenty of time for the totals to change. If your favorite band is up big, you’ve got to keep them in the lead … or, if they’re losing, well, you’ve got your work cut out for you. Voting in the first-round continues until Monday, March 24 at noon E.T. … so hit the polls! Championship dreams hang in the balance!
