“The Voice” battle rounds reached its halfway point Tuesday night as 12 more singers duked it out, singing their hearts out, to remain in the competition.
Coaches Adam Levine, Shakira Shakira, Usher and Blake Shelton were much more selective with their steal button as five hopefuls were sent home after coming up short in their respective battles.
Here’s how night two of the battle rounds went down:
Advice From “The Man” Himself
The first matchup pitted Team Adam’s Caleb Elder against Delvin Choice. The two singers were as different as it got according to their coach, Elder with a gravelly, raspy voice and Choice described as having a “tremendous” voice. Levine gave the singers Aloe Blacc’s “The Man,” and with Blacc himself as a guest mentor, Elder and Choice received first-rate advice on how to tackle the song in the battle ring. After a less-than-stellar rehearsal, Levine beamed with pride as his singers hit the stage, and later commended them on their vast improvements. He declared the Delvin Choice winner of the battle.
Rocker Rumble
Shakira chose to pit her two rockers against each other for a battle that guest mentor Miranda Lambert could only describe as “straight up rock ‘n’ roll.” Pop rocker Clarissa Serna’s powerhouse vocals wowed the coaches, but they were also thoroughly impressed with classic rocker Jeremy Briggs’ ability to keep up with his opponent. Both singers exuded confidence, something coach Shakira deemed “quintessential to rock ‘n’ roll.” Clarissa Serna was crowned winner of the battle.
Divas Bring the Heat
Night two came to a “smoking hot” end as Team Usher’s Brittnee Camelle and Melissa Jimenez raised the temperature in the battle round stage with their performance of “Give It to Me Right.” Armed with advice from guest mentor Jill Scott, Camelle broke down the wall between herself and the audience, and Jimenez made sure to hit her enormous notes with expert precision. Usher declared Melissa Jimenez the winner, commending her for her high notes and risks, but it wasn’t long until Levine and Shakira hit their steal buttons for losing singer Brittnee Camelle. After an intense coaches battle for the singer, Camelle landed herself a second chance in the competition with Team Adam, and Levine was more than happy to have a singer with such “strength and determination” join his team.
