New Photos Released In Kurt Cobain’s Suicide

Almost exactly 20 years after Kurt Cobain‘s suicide, Seattle Police have released previously unseen photos from the scene of his death.

Both photos show what appears to be drug paraphernalia — a spoon and needles are seen in one photo — along with a pair of sunglasses, a pack of cigarettes, a towel and a wallet.

The photos are far from revelatory — it was known that Cobain was high on heroin when he shot himself — but they were among four rolls of photos that were only recently discovered when the case was reviewed.

Nearly two decades after his death, cold case detective Mike Ciesynski decided this week to review the case — but did not reopen it or reinvestigate it. There have been several conspiracy theories surrounding the Nirvana frontman’s suicide — even a book published in 1999 titled Who Killed Kurt Cobain?: The Mysterious Death of an Icon — and it was those lingering questions and “a lot of media interest” that led Ciesynski to take another look.

In a statement on the Seattle Police Department website, Ciesynski said the reason the photos were not released before now is that investigators “felt it was a suicide and already had Polaroids and photos from the medical examiner.”

The detective didn’t discover anything new in the case, but he explained that “there were so many conspiracy theories out there, it was good judgement on their behalf to hold to this.”

“Sometimes people believe what they read — some of the disinformation from some of the books, that this was a conspiracy. That’s completely inaccurate,” he said. “It’s a suicide. This is a closed case.”
