MTV’s Musical March Madness: 5 Seconds Of Summer, Bleachers Are On The Brink

MTV’s Musical March Madness tournament is heading into the homestretch of round two — polls close Monday, March 31 at noon ET — and with the Sweet 16 looming on the horizon, there are plenty of bands that are just barely hanging on.

Vote Now In All #MMM Second-Round Matchups!

Of course, there’s still time to change all that; if your favorite band is behind, hit the polls (or, if they’re in the lead, vote like crazy to keep them there!) And as we prepare to cut the remaining field of 32 in half, let’s take a look at the matchups in each #MMM region, beginning today with the Midwest and the West, where there’s still plenty left to be decided.

Midwest Region

Top-seeded Fall Out Boy seem like a lock for the Sweet 16 at this point, as they lead Jack Antonoff’s Bleachers by a huge amount — no wonder he’s in therapy. The same is true for #4 Blink-182, who have shown why they’re a perennial #MMM powerhouse in round two, handling #5 the Fray with ease. It certainly seems like it’ll be FOB v. Blink in the round of 16 … though, again, we won’t know for sure until Monday.

Things are quite different in the Midwest’s other matchups though, as #3 Walk The Moon and #6 the Killers are locked in a tight — like, a statistical dead-heat — battle. And #10 5 Seconds Of Summer are getting all they can handle from #15 Amy Lee, with the Evanescence frontwoman currently leads by less than 500 votes.

Can WTM prove that last year’s Final Four run was no fluke? Will the Australian upstarts — who have certainly got their strategy set — score another upset? That’s all up to you.

West Region

After a spate of surprising first-round results, the highest-remaining seed in the West is #9 Panic! at the Disco, and though they’re no strangers to tournament success, previous results may not guarantee future performance: they’re currently in a neck-and-neck battle with #16 Kesha, clinging to a slim lead with just days left.

Meanwhile, #13 AFI can rest easy — they’re blowing out #12 Pierce The Veil — and #11 Linkin Park appear ready to punch their tickets to the Sweet 16, too, as they’re up big on #14 the Neighbourhood.

And, after pulling what was perhaps the most shocking upset in #MMM history in round one, #15 Echosmith‘s run in the tournament appears to be coming to a close, as they’re currently being crushed by #10 the Used. Somehow, they managed to get by #2 Thirty Seconds To Mars … but the guys from Orem, Utah are proving to be much a much tougher matchup for the Sierota siblings; guess those Chipotle dreams will have to wait for another day.

Who will survive to the Sweet 16? It’s your call: Voting in all second-round #MMM matchups is underway, and polls will remain open until Monday, March 31 at noon ET … so hit the polls, and help this Cinderella story come true!
