Nicki Minaj’s alter ego Roman hasn’t shown his face since her last album, and there are no complaints on this end. The YMCMB rapper is digging her stilettos into a serious rap zone now, continuing with the new single “Chi-Raq” featuring Lil Herb.
Over a sinister beat from Boi-1da, Vinylz and Allen Ritter, Nicki immediately starts snapping on the first verse, with a nice play on words for her colorful up-dos…and all that power. “Ain’t yelling cut when it’s shooting time/Sign up, it’s recruiting time,” she spits. “Big wigs with a suit and tie/And them big things got two inside.”
She briefly touches on the uproar over the unofficial cover art for her “Lookin’ Ass” single (“Maclom X daughter came at me/Lookin’ ass n—-s ain’t happy”) and reminds us that she’s no joke (“I f—ed with real trap n—-s/Pop star, icon, but I send n—-s to come snatch n—-s”), before shouting out Lil Herb’s EBK crew and passing the mic.
The 18-year-old Chicago native holds down both the hook and the second verse, with no shortage of gun and gang references, and several nods to his city.
And on the outro, Nicki tosses out one more little gem, for the Stans. “I always got a trick up my sleeve,” she teases with that half snarl. “I might give you a new trick every week until this album drops. I don’t know, I figured they wanted some more.”
Yes, please.
Nicki Minaj’s third album The Pink Print is due later this year.
