Will this year’s big Billboard winner be radioactive or royal? It looks to be a close call, as both Lorde and Imagine Dragons are tied with nominations in 12 categories at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards.
Billboard announced the finalists in 40 categories Wednesday (April 9) with help from Jason Derulo on “Good Morning America” — Derulo will also perform on the show, which goes down Sunday, May 18.
Lorde and Imagine Dragons have the most nominations this year, clashing directly in nine categories: Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Digital Songs Artist, Top Radio Songs Artist, Top Rock Artist, Top Rock Album, Top Hot 100 Song, Top Digital Song, Top Streaming Song (Audio) and Top Rock Song.
Nominations are determined by sales, radio play, touring, streaming and fan interaction on social platforms.
Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are also likely doing happy dances today, as JT scored 11 nominations, Perry 10 and Mack and Lewis 8. This could be the first time that Timberlake scores an award as a solo artist, a nice nod after returning from his seven-year musical vacation. He’s nominated for Top Artist and Top Billboard 200 Album.
Other nominees include Robin Thicke, T.I., Pharrell Williams, Daft Punk, Miley Cyrus, Avicii, Rihanna and Zedd. The 2014 Milestone Award also has some heavy-hitters vying for the prize: Imagine Dragons, John Legend, Luke Bryan, OneRepublic, Ellie Goulding and Carrie Underwood. That award is up to the fan vote, and will also be presented by a fan along with Kelly Rowland.
Who are you rooting for this Billboard Music Awards? Do you think Lorde or Imagine Dragons will sweep?
