Will ‘Rio 2’ Fly Past ‘Captain America’ At The Box Office?

Captain America survived his battle against the Winter Soldier. But will a flock of tropical birds take Cap down at the box office this MTV Movie Awards weekend?

is looking to do what Georges Batroc, Brock Rumlow and a giant conspiracy could not, arriving in theaters against last weekend’s box-office champ. Industry experts predict a photo finish for the two sequels, each of which is expected to earn around $40 million.

Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, Jamie Foxx and Tracy Morgan lead the voice cast for the $103 million 3-D sequel. “Rio” opened with $39 million back in 2011 and eventually went on to earn over $484.6 million worldwide. Recent family-friendly movies “Muppets Most Wanted” and “Mr. Peabody & Sherman” enjoyed positive reviews, but critics have not been kind to “Rio 2.” The first film sits at 72 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, while the follow-up is “rotten” at 47 percent.

Bruno Mars, Janelle Monae, Kristen Chenoweth and Andy Garcia join the cast from the original in “Rio 2,” but the impressive cast of “The Winter Soldier” will still give the jungle cartoon a run for its money. Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Robert Redford, et al set a new record for April with the “Captain America” sequel’s $95 million debut. The ninth blockbuster in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe has made $133 million in North America already, with another $207.1 million from foreign markets. “Rio 2” has collected $55.5 million overseas, where it got an early start.

Moviegoers haven’t had a supernatural horror flick since January when the critical dud “The Devil’s Due” opened with an unimpressive $8.3 million. Film critics have actually been kind to “Oculus,” which was written and directed by second-time filmmaker Mike Flanagan. “Oculus” should open around $12 million. Relativity partnered with Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions (“Paranormal Activity,” “Insidious,” “The Purge”) for the micro-budget scarefest.

Baseball-movie veteran Kevin Costner returns to the sports genre with which is expected to open around $10 million.

“Noah” should round out the top five with about $9 million, which will give the Biblical epic a domestic total near $90 million.

After two weeks in limited release, “The Raid 2” is now playing in 954 theaters.
