Any show as big as the 2014 MTV Movie Awards is going to require a ton of planning, secret keeping and then even more planning. That’s why in the days leading up to the big night on Sunday (April 13), MTV News talked with Jesse Ignjatovic, one of the guys responsible for pulling it off.
Ignjatovic shared some behind-the-scenes secrets and a few teases of what viewers can expect when the show kicks off at 9 p.m. ET. Here’s everything we learned during out pre-show chat.
Ignjatovic said that the extensive use of pyrotechnics in the show stage came out of the fact that the venue is usually cold. He was probably kidding, but there is going to be a lot of fire either way.
Some of the presenters at the Movie Awards will enter through a giant Golden Popcorn located on the stage in the Nokia Theatre.
The design of the stage still year, as it often is, was inspired by the look and feel of Hollywood summer movie season.
Producers of both the MTV Movie Awards and the VMA have wanted Conan O’Brien to host for years, but timing often got in the way.
Conan’s opening sequence is both “game changing” and highly secretive. “I can’t tell you a lot,” Ignjatovic said. “I think it will be one that people talk about.”
Including Jennifer Aniston as the first-ever female nominee for Best Shirtless Performance is one of the other game-changing moments set for awards night.
Eminem and Rihanna’s performance of “Monster” will be the first time they sing their hit song live on television.
The special tribute to Paul Walker will be the first of its kind at the MTV Movie Awards. “He is so important to the MTV audience,” Ignjatovic said. “People haven’t had the chance to really celebrate him, and this is the place to do it.”
21 Pilots will also “ignite the audience.” (We’re pretty sure this is a metaphor.)
This is the first MTV Movie Awards Eminem is attending since the Bruno incident.
Channing Tatum is the first male recipient of the Trailblazer Award. “Everything he does is successful, and he can do anything,” Ignjatovic said. “We just want to celebrate him.”
