Fans have been eagerly awaiting Ab-Soul‘s new album for some time now, and though it has no release date yet, they may be rewarded for their patience with a mixtape.
“I’ve already begun #LT3 as well…” the TDE spitter tweeted early Friday morning (April 11).
The release he’s likely referring to is Longterm 3, which would be the third installment of a mixtape series he introduced in 2009. In January of that year, the Carson, California, native released Longterm; he followed that up with Longterm 2: Lifestyles of the Broke and Almost Famous in June 2010. The title trend continued on his first retail album, Longterm Mentality, which dropped in April 2011.
Those projects, as well as his last album, 2012’s Control System, featured fellow TDE rappers Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q and Jay Rock, so odds are the Black Hippy crew may again unite on record for the Longterm 3 tape.
As for that album, earlier this year, Soulo announced that he’d finished work on it though he’s yet to reveal a title. “The project IS finished tho, follow @dangerookipawaa for further details #TDE,” he wrote on Twitter in February.
“Ali is mixing it right now,” Ab told Bootleg Kev in January. “We just want to present it in a real cool way. I feel like everybody’s being very creative with how they’re presenting their music.”
While we don’t know exactly when the album will drop, it seems safe to expect it sometime this year. “WE RAN 2013 WITH OUT DROPPING 1 ALBUM. I WONDER WUTS GONE HAPPEN IN 2014 WHEN I DROP 6.. THEY NOT READY 4 THIS #TDE #HiiiPoWeR TAKE OVER,” Top Dawg Ent. CEO Anthony Tight tweeted in December.
While release dates for both collections are still unknown. Maybe the rapper’s betting on what his fans know: you can never have too much Soul.
