If you judge Rico Love‘s new single simply by the title, then you may be missing the message that the singer/songwriter and rapper is sending. But then again, Rico had to expect some folks to oppose a song he calls “Bitches Be Like,” right?
“I had an issue because there were a few female blog sites where I wanted to premiere the record on because I feel like the song is anti-bitch, pro-women. They didn’t want to put it, they didn’t want to post it,” Love told MTV News Thursday, on the eve of the track’s music video premiere online
The song, which appears on a newly re-released version of Rico’s Discrete Luxury EP, tells the story of a woman who chases material wealth and superficial trappings while neglecting some of life’s more wholesome offerings.
“Bitches be like, ‘Hair done, nails done, but I ain’t got nowhere to stay,’ ” Rico sings on the hook, purposely generalizing his subject to prove his point.
Love made his mark in music as a songwriter, penning tracks for Usher and Beyoncé, so you can be sure that every word is deliberate. On one of the song’s rap verses, he questions the motives of women who sleep around and those who post promiscuous photos on Instagram for attention.
Now there hasn’t exactly been an overflow of outrage, but some will surely argue that this type of song, when coming from a man, doesn’t do much to help empower women. Rico welcomes the discussion.
“I don’t mind getting a conversation going and starting a dialogue, because I know what I intend to say and I’m not pulling back any punches. I mean what I say,” he said.
“If you got a problem with it, let’s talk about it and figure it out and get to the bottom of this sh–, so we can start seeing a change and seeing a difference.”
