“You were chosen to be his mom,” says a mysterious benefactor to a pregnant Zoe Saldana. “By who?” she asks.
That seems to be the central question at the heart of the new trailer for NBC’s horror miniseries “Rosemary’s Baby,” based on the famous novel by Ira Levin. Saldana plays Rosemary, whose perfect life is made seemingly more perfect when her husband (“Suits” star Patrick J. Adams) suddenly strikes it rich and she becomes pregnant.
But the pregnancy starts taking a turn for the supernatural, as a doctor tells Rosemary that “There are some things in this ultrasound that I’ve never seen before.” Rosemary starts to doubt the origins of the child she’s carrying inside of her and everyone around her, going so far as to say, “There are witches in my building,” which will not get you invited to many apartment parties.
While the miniseries is based on the Levin novel and will no doubt be inspired by and compared to Roman Polanski’s Oscar-winning film adaptation starring Mia Farrow, the series looks to be more in the vein of NBC’s “Hannibal,” with a darkly cinematic flair.
The trailer also indicates that Rosemary’s husband will have a larger role, and we’ll get to see his motivations for making a deal with some unsavory, possibly Satanic characters, things we didn’t get much of a glimpse of in either the book or the film.
So just what is Rosemary’s baby? Is it a demon, the Antichrist or maybe even one of those blue aliens from “Avatar”? We won’t have to wait long to find out, as the four-hour miniseries debuts (appropriately?) on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 11, at 9 p.m.
