Diddy Is ‘Speechless’ About His Honorary Doctorate Degree From Howard University

Diddy just secured the top spot on Forbes’ list of Hip Hop’s Wealthiest Artists again, but you know what he’s really excited about? Receiving an honorary doctorate degree from Howard University.

On Tuesday, Howard University announced that Diddy would be speaking at this year’s commencement ceremony, where he would be awarded with an honorary doctorate degree in humanities.

Five other notable figures will also receive honorary degrees during the ceremony, including CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer and PepsiCo CEO Indra K. Nooyi.

Diddy, who attended Howard in the late 1980s, then dropped out to pursue his career in entertainment, was so excited that he took to Instagram to gush about it.

“For one of the first times in my life I am truly speechless,” he wrote. “There are no words to describe the feeling I had when I heard the news that @HowardU was presenting me with an Honorary Doctorate degree and inviting me to give the keynote commencement address on May 10th. @howardU I’m coming home! Thank you to @WFrederickMD, the Howard University Board of Trustees and all of the students of Howard University #TurnUp #Bison4Life.”

Of course, there were the critics who chimed in on Twitter and complained that Diddy didn’t deserve the honor since he hadn’t actually graduated from the school. But maybe those critics have been blind to Mr. Combs’ many accomplishments over the past two decades.

“In selecting the individuals who will be awarded honorary degrees, Howard University continues the tradition of identifying leaders whose work has clearly contributed to the advancement of their fields and the world,” Howard’s interim president Wayne A.I. Frederick said in a statement.

“We are honored to have Mr. Combs serve as our speaker. He sat in classrooms where our students sit, walked ‘The Yard,’ and like many students, his entrepreneurial spirit was sparked at Howard. We know he will inspire our class to work hard and to always strive for excellence.”
