Johnny Depp Thinks The Technology In ‘Transcendence’ Is ‘Very Close To Being A Reality’

Could we see the events of “Johnny Depp, that kind of tech isn’t too far off.

“When you look at it, it’s kind of a sci-fi thing,” Depp told MTV News. “But when you dig a little bit deeper, the technology that we use in the film and the technology is very close to being a reality.”

In the film, Johnny Depp plays Will Caster, a leading artificial intelligence researcher whose intelligence is uploaded to the very machine he’s spent his life creating.

Directed by Christopher Nolan’s cinematographer Wally Pfister, making his directorial debut, it explores age-old questions about the conflict between our need to create, and how far is too far for our technological ambitions to reach.

So should we start worrying about cold-blooded supercomputers? Is the “Terminator” series’ Skynet on the way? The film also features a violent clash between Will’s new silicon consciousness and a group of radical anti-A.I. activists — one of whom puts a bullet in Depp’s character, setting the story in motion.

But Depp seems a little more optimistic about how this may all turn out in real life.

“[Transcendence] is a foretelling of what’s to come,” Depp said. “Not necessarily the outcome of the film, but we have the technology to upload human consciousness and they’re just fine-tuning “

Transcendence is in theaters April 18.
