‘X-Men’ Producer: More Marvel Crossover Is ‘The Dream’

Well, Spider-Man is kind of a mutant, right? So maybe a cross-pollination with the “X-Men” franchise makes sense.

That’s what Simon Kinberg, a producer on both “X-Men: Days of Future Past” and the upcoming “Fantastic Four” seems to think. In interviews from this weekend’s WonderCon, Kinberg mentioned that he’d be more than open to the possibility of a crossover. We already know that the upcoming “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” will feature a post-credits scene starring our favorite band of (time traveling!) mutants when it hits theaters May 2, but Kinberg is gunning for even more. In an interview with ComingSoon, he responded enthusiastically when asked about a larger crossover.

“I would love it. The dream to me — I almost feel like Martin Luther King or somebody — I see a world where everyone is joined together,” he said. “The dream is, obviously, one day to do a Marvel movie that is with all the Marvel characters or at least a universe where they can dive in and out of one another’s films. Because that’s the way the comics were created, I think that’s the way the movies should actually be. For a series of business reasons, they aren’t. That’s not for narrative or creative reasons…

“We’re not in competition with each other. We actually can be helping the cause for all these different movies. It’s been shown that audiences have enough of a palate for them.”

Meanwhile, Avi Arad, a producer on “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” is considerably cooler on the idea. In an interview with IGN, he resisted when asked about a crossover.

“I think I’m probably a little bit of the militant here,” he said. “I think it will take a moment in which we’ve run out of ideas. There’s so much to tell about Spider-Man. There’s so much to tell about the Sinister Six. The relationship between Spider-Man and Venom will bring a whole other world in.”

Arad compared the idea to making toys that had stopped selling glow in the dark to draw the life out “at least another Christmas.”

“We don’t need it yet,” he said.

So, Magneto, probably best to take a raincheck on that shawarma date with Spidey.
