Joel “Mr. Man” Witherspoon used to be a member of the popular hip-hop group Philly’s Most Wanted, but now the former rapper is in critical condition, and another man is wanted in connection with the hit-and-run accident that left Mr. Man seriously injured.
Witherspoon was standing in front of his Collingdale, Pennsylvania, home on Saturday when he was run down, seemingly intentionally, by an SUV, according to local news affiliate 6ABC.com. He suffered two broken legs and head injuries.
Mr. Man, along with his partner Boo-Bonic, dropped their major label debut, Get Down or Lay Down, in 2001 and were best known for their Neptunes-produced singles “Cross the Border” and “Please Don’t Mind.”
Pharrell Williams and his partner, Chad Hugo, produced the majority of the duo’s first album. But after PMW split from the Neptunes, the rap duo fell out of the spotlight, dropping a 2004 follow-up to little fanfare. Since then, Witherspoon has been raising his children and remodeling homes for a living, according to his mother.
Witherspoon was standing next to his white Cadillac when a man driving a black Range Rover sped down his dead-end block and struck him with the vehicle. Afterward, the driver of the Range Rover jumped into another car, which was being driven by a female. Authorities have identified the suspect as 37-year-old Conroy Williams of Philadelphia and the female getaway driver is believed to Witherspoon’s ex-girlfriend.
Police have issued an arrest warrant for Williams, who now faces criminal attempted murder and aggravated assault charges.
