There are two possibilities about what’s going on with actor Simon Pegg right now: either he’s hardcore trolling the internet, or he’s snagged a role in “Star Wars: Episode VII.”
Okay, fine, there’s a couple of other possibilities we’ll get to in a second, as well as some broader speculation. But first, the facts.
On May 12 it was reported that Pegg had wrapped filming in London on his latest feature, Terry Jones’ “Absolutely Anything.”
He certainly has a number of other projects on his schedule, including possible post-production work for “Man Up,” “Kill Me Three Times” and the aforementioned Terry Jones feature. That’s not to mention working on “Mission Impossible 5,” which is currently in pre-production and will be released in 2015.
With that all on his plate, though, why is Pegg trying to park in Harrison Ford’s parking space?
Unless there’s another Harrison Ford, or the actor — who is reprising his role as Han Solo in the upcoming “Star Wars” sequel — has parking spaces all over London just waiting for him with his name on them, there’s a good chance this is at Pinewood Studios, the home base for the J.J. Abrams production.
Only adding fuel to the fire? Mere hours earlier, Pegg retweeted this tweet by none other than the official “Star Wars” account itself:
So is Pegg making an appearance in the next “Star Wars” movie? It certainly makes a lot of sense, as he’s worked with Abrams on both the “Mission Impossible” and “Star Trek” movie series. Given his schedule, we don’t expect he’d have time for a major role in the sequels, but as a brief bit of comic relief, or a cameo? It’s not outside the realm of possibility, particularly given Pegg is a huge fan of the franchise.
But before we go making any “Pegg Shot First” t-shirts, let’s throw a little cold water on the idea.
First, and most importantly, “Star Wars” has already begun filming in Abu Dhabi. Though that doesn’t mean all of the principal cast or production are on set, chances are the principals may be down there hard at work. So Pegg may just be filling an empty parking spot.
Second, Pegg also spent the day tweeting about Batman, “Game of Thrones” and “Star Trek.” The guy is a huge, proud nerd, so him tweeting about “Star Wars” a bunch isn’t even remotely out of character.
Third, even if Pegg was going to visit the “Star Wars” offices, it could just be for a behind the scenes tour, or to visit his friend J.J. Abrams. Pegg also famously visited the Marvel offices and pointed to a picture of Ant-Man, leading to wild speculation he got the lead in the movie. Turns out, he just wanted to point out the character his friend Edgar Wright was working with next.
That all said, we want Pegg to be in “Star Wars.” He’s been a stand-out in nearly every movie he’s made, and clearly been an excellent comedic muse for Abrams. Having Pegg in “Episode VII” would be a very, very good thing.
“Star Wars: Episode VII” will hit theaters on December 18, 2015.
