Those of you who don’t feel like shelling out the $16 to see “X-Men: Days of Future Past” on Friday (May 23) have another time-jump friendly option — The CW will conclude its two-part miniseries, “Labyrinth,” at 8 pm.
Part one aired on Thursday (you can watch it in full on The CW’s website), and critics have already had their way with the historical drama, which stars Jessica Brown Findlay (“Downton Abbey”) and Vanessa Kirby as two women living in different time periods (1209 and modern day) who are both chasing the Holy Grail. It also stars the Winter Solider himself, Sebastian Stan, as well as Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton), so if that right there isn’t enough to make you tune in, here’s what the critics are saying.
Stick It Out
“The action scenes are spot on and it’s a cobblestone-aganza of gorgeous settings. The story hits its stride by the second half of the first night, and those who stick it out will likely be hooked.” — Liane Bonin Starr, HitFix
A Head-Scratcher
“The mythology is both more complicated and more vague than that, which makes the first two hours of ‘Labyrinth’ a demanding ride. It also suggests a more hard-hitting ending than the one we ultimately get. Still if you make it through the first night, the second night gets better. You just gotta have faith.” — David Hinckley, Daily News
Needs More Bowie
“Many great labyrinths exist in pop culture. There’s Jim Henson’s 1986 gem ‘Labyrinth’ and Guillermo del Toro’s mystical and delightfully creepy ‘Pan’s Labyrinth.’ And now there’s the CW miniseries ‘Labyrinth,’ which, to its detriment, does not feature any cameos by David Bowie or deformed creatures with eyeballs on their palms.” — Ariana Bacle, Entertainment Weekly
A Mystery Worth Solving
“Here is one of the most mysterious TV projects of the year. ‘Labyrinth’ is a surprisingly sophisticated historical thriller made more than two years ago (the late Tony Scott is listed as an executive producer) airing as a four-hour miniseries on the CW, an outlet which has rarely exhibited an interest in such grown-up fare… There are excellent siege and battle scenes (particularly by TV standards). And the cast, which includes Tom Felton, Sebastian Stan, Katie McGrath, Tony Curran, John Lynch, and others, is large and appealing.” — David Hiltbrand, Philly.com
Reign It In
“With fantasy and period dramas remaining hot, fans of The CW’s ‘Reign’ will want to lose themselves in ‘Labyrinth.’” — Ryan Berenz, Channel Guide Magazine
