Mariah Carey Finds #1 Spot ‘Elusive’

When Mariah Carey named her 14th studio album Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse, she probably did mean it literally. But, with the exception of the odd holiday album, Mimi’s latest will do something few of her other releases have done lately: miss a #1 debut and set a new sales low.

Frozen Out By Coldplay
Sure, six of Mariah’s albums have debuted at #1 with sales above the 100,000 (or 200,000, or 300,000) mark, but things were a bit more low-key this time around. In fact, Chanteuse came in at #3 on the Billboard 200 album chart with modest sales of 58,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. That’s the smallest opening for one of her non-holiday albums since SoundScan started tracking data in 1991. The harder pill to swallow, though, is that she was beat out at #1 by Coldplay, whose Ghost Stories plunged 78 percent in week two to nearly 83,000, but still hung on to the top spot.

In fact, she also came in behind country singer Brantley Gilbert’s Just As I Am, which fell 69 percent in week two to 65,000.

Where Mahonies At?
Austin Mahone‘s The Secret EP debuted at #5 on sales of nearly 46,000, which is really all he ever needs. Further down the chart, Cher Lloyd’s Sorry I’m Late was just outside the top 10 at #12 (17,000) and Robyn’s EP with Royksopp, Do It Again, landed at #14 (15,000).

Still ‘Fancy,’ Still #1
Strengthening her bid for the song of the summer, Iggy Azalea‘s “Fancy” held on to #1 for another week on the Billboard Digital Songs Chart, moving another 283,000 copies. Her historic run held up as Ariana Grande‘s “Problem” was still at #2 (243,000), giving her another Beatles-esque week in the top two spots.

Nico & Vinz’s “Am I Wrong” also stood still, hanging at #3 (149,000), while MAGIC’s “Rude” was up five spots to #4 (up 25 percent, 141,000), while 5 Seconds of Summer had the week’s biggest debut with “Good Girls,” which came in at #8 (121,000), giving the Australian pop rockers their best sales week to date on the charts. Also debuting in the top 10 was Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me,” up eights spots to #10 (103,000).
