What does it take to defeat Tom Cruise? Ask author John Green, because the big-screen adaptation of his wildly popular “The Fault in Our Stars” soared past the A-lister’s “Edge of Tomorrow” for a huge opening, and is on track to woo the weekend crowd for a win at the box office.
No fault in this performance: the YA drama defied expectations with a $23.5-$25+ million opening, on track for what could be an incredible $53+ million grossing weekend. Meanwhile, Angelina Jolie bewitched the competition with her ability to own the box office two weekends in a row — “Maleficent” conjured second place, which leaves Tom’s “Edge of Tomorrow” on Cruise control for a third place opener – the film debuted at $10.4 million, with a projected $28-$30 million weekend.
“Edge” isn’t the only star-packed, big-budget action film that “Fault” has unhanded. It seems, based on the movie’s Thursday night numbers, that the power of young love also defeats superhero mutants! “The Fault in Our Stars” took in $8.2 million on Thursday night, while “X-Men: Days of Future Past” garnered $8.1 million on its late-night Thursday opening.
It probably doesn’t hurt that “The Fault in Our Stars” — which follows the romance between two teens who meet at a cancer support group — includes a tear duct-shattering performance by mega-star Shailene Woodley and the uber-charismatic Ansel Elgort. In our very scientific opinions, we think it has something to do with the film’s magical propensity to make your eyes leak uncontrollably. Seriously, everyone — even Green — is reduced to a blubbering mess while watching the film.
