Fans were pleasantly surprised to hear Missy Elliott on “Nobody’s Perfect” from J. Cole‘s debut album, and for his upcoming sophomore effort the Roc Nation MC will be gathering some more surprising guests — but none of them will be rapping.
“I got TLC on the album, T-Boz and Chilli,” Cole said of Born Sinner during an interview with London’s BBC 1Xtra.
It’s not every day that the iconic singing group get together. After Left Eye passed away in 2002 the group has managed to release just one album, so getting them was no easy feat. “That’s management right there, shout out to Bystorm, they made that happen. The same thing with Missy Elliott, sometimes you need management to pull those favors, to make those calls,” Cole explained to Fuse on Thursday. “They got me in touch, they loved the song, they loved the music.
“It’s like my favorites, I wanted to go and get my favorites and then have them do the things that I love them for doing… [TLC] is doing what I love them for,” he continued.
Miguel also appears on Born Sinner‘s lead single “Power Trip,” but Cole says there will be no MCs contributing bars to his June 18 work. “Nobody else other than J. Cole is rapping on the album, but there’s some great features,” he said.
Cole’s first album featured only two spitters: Drake on “In the Morning” and Jay-Z on “Nice Watch,” but unless Hov is singing or doing some sort of spoken word it looks like the Roc Nation CEO won’t be a part of Born Sinner.
Earlier this week, Cole officially moved his album release date up a week to June 18 so to come out on the same day as Kanye West’s Yeezus LP. It was a bold move for the young MC to purposely go head-to-head with the proven veteran, but Cole believes in his album that much. “It’s a definite statement about how I feel about my album, which is confident,” he told Billboard.com on Tuesday.
