Originally, A$AP Ferg planned for Trap Lord to be a free online mixtape, but after putting in so much work, the up-and-coming Harlem, New York, rap star decided to put a price tag on his very first project. Those old-school features have to cost a pretty penny, right?
“I got some of the best of the best on there. It just got serious and more serious because my features are like Bone Thugs-n-Harmony. I got Onyx on the same song as B-Real,” Ferg told us last week. “It’s a kind of legendary piece of work, it’s like art. You can’t really give good art away for nothing.”
Ferg is the next up out of the A$AP Mob, after the crew’s de facto leader A$AP Rocky. Already he has made his presence known in rap with his “Work” single and its all-star remix with Rocky, French Montana, Schoolboy Q and Trinidad James. Given all of his new energy, fans might find it as a bit of a surprise that for Trap Lord, Ferg dug back into the 1990s to connect with the likes of Bone, Thugs, Cypress Hill’s B-Real and of course Onyx, whom he says reminds him a lot of the A$AP Mob.
The four-man Queens, New York group first broke out in 1993 with their loud and angry debut Bacdafucup. Original Onyx member Big DS passed away from cancer in 2003 and Sonee Seeza, has remained out of the spotlight for a number of years. Ferg, however, managed to pull the group’s two most popular members Sticky Fingaz and Fredro Starr for his LP.
“Sticky and Fredro, they hang out a lot all the time. They’re brothers. They just be everywhere together. They’re still wild,” he said of his impression of the pair. “They remind me of us, A$AP. They remind me of A$AP. So we had a lot of moments where we weren’t even working, we were just going over like old stories.”
