LOS ANGELES — With Michael Jackson, Beyoncé and Aaliyah at the top of her list of musical influences, it’s no surprise 16-year-old Zendaya Coleman strives for perfection. And as the Disney star gears up to release her debut album this fall, she’s been working overtime to ensure that everything meets her high standards.
“I’m very hands on. I want to make sure things are perfect,” the “Shake It Up” star told MTV News while in the studio recording her new single “Fireflies.” “My vision has to be complete, and you know, I don’t mind doing things over and over and over again until it’s perfect.”
And since she’s recording her new music with Hollywood Records — whose current roster includes Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato and Lucy Hale — one might think the is feeling pressure from all sides. Instead, Zendaya says there’s only one person in particular that she aims to please: herself.
“I have to be able to play my songs over and over and over again,” she explained. “I have to love them because if I don’t love them, how can I expect anyone else to want to play it a 1,000 times and love it?”
Although Zendaya deems herself her harshest critic, there are a couple of others she hopes to impress with her upcoming record.
“I really want rap artists on it, like, I think that’s something that I would be so stoked about. Having A$AP [Rocky] on it or Big Sean, that would be crazy,” she replied when asked if she’ll be collaborating with anyone on the album. “So that’s what I hopefully want to work on and try to figure that out.”
