When not fronting the hugely successful band Maroon 5 (maybe you’ve heard of them?), Adam Levine likes to just take it easy. If your definition of “taking it easy” translates to coaching contestants on “The Voice,” a nationally broadcasted music competition that airs two seasons a year, that is.
I caught up with Adam this week to find out everything I could about the series’ seventh season, which is shooting right now and will air this fall on NBC. But first, I had to ask him about some comments of his that were recently published in Rolling Stone: “‘The Voice’ is very successful, but it’s got a ways to go if it wants to have as profound an impact as ‘Idol.’ I’m not going to lie to you: I think there are problems… Millions of people watch the show every week and fall in love with a singer, then you don’t hear much from them.”
For his part, the “Maps” singer contends that those quotes were “taken out of context,” although he wasn’t keen on diving too deeply into clarifying what he actually meant. “The more I say, the more it’s taken out of context. I’d rather not discuss that.” Fair enough. “Yeah, it was bullsh-t. I was pissed off about it, but it’s all good.” BRB, wiping the sweat off my brow.
As for the next batch of “The Voice,” Adams shared that “Season 7 is far and away the best season we’ve ever had.” As for the addition of new coaches Pharrell Williams and Gwen Stefani (who has a collaboration featured on Maroon 5′s new album V, out September 2)? “You know, Gwen and Pharrell have been amazing and just so cool and so fun and easy to work with… Chemistry’s a weird thing. You never know if you’re gonna have it. We’ve been fortunate now to have it three times in a row.
“I cannot wait for people to see what we’re doing.” You hear that? That’s the sounds of millions of fans of “The Voice” simultaneously screaming “SAME!” across the country.
