Captain America got his butt kicked by the ladies over the weekend and soon, he’ll face off against Spider-Man.
But Marvel’s First Avenger shouldn’t be upset. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is already the biggest April release ever, even if the Phase 2 sequel surrendered to “The Other Women” here at home and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ (as well as “Rio 2″) overseas.
Hollywood would be wise to target more studio pictures toward the half of the population that identifies as female. “The Other Woman” topped the domestic box office with a $24.7 million debut, thanks to an audience that was 75 percent female and 65 percent over the age of 25.
Despite mostly negative reviews, “The Other Woman” has already made more than its $40 million production budget around the world. “The Other Woman” stars Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton. Nicki Minaj has a tiny role as Lydia, the assistant to Diaz’s character.
Captain America gave up his box-office crown to Spider-Man overseas. Marc Webb’s second installment of Sony’s franchise reboot debuted two weeks ahead of its domestic release, expanding to South Korea, Russia, Italy and Japan (among other markets) over the weekend. “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ has made $132 million already, which is roughly in line with the movie that first put Andrew Garfield under the mask in 2012. Dane DeHaan finally admitted which direction Harry Osborn is headed in the Spidey sequel, speaking with MTV News at the film’s red carpet premiere in New York.
After three weeks in the top spot, “The Winter Soldier” was #2 at home with $16.05 million. Cap’s first post-”Marvel’s The Avengers” go-round has made $225 million domestically and over $645.1 million total, which is more than the worldwide theatrical run of “Thor: The Dark World.”
“Heaven is for Real” was #3 in its second weekend, adding $13.8 million to its grosses for a $52 million total. “Rio 2″ was #4 with $13.7 million, inching toward the $100 million mark domestically. The late Paul Walker’s “Brick Mansions,” produced by filmmaker Luc Besson, opened at #5 with $9.6 million. Supernatural horror flick “The Quiet Ones” was a dud, falling behind last weekend’s big budget flop “Transcendence” (#6 with $4.1 million) with a $4 million opening.
