With Marvel Studios already set on their formula of stand-alone movies leading to “Avengers” crossovers, the other companies that are holding onto the rights of heroes like Spider-Man have been left to find their own way. For the wall-crawler, starting with “The Amazing Spider-Man,” all signs have been pointing toward an eventual villain team-up, possibly forming the infamous Sinister Six.
“The Amazing Spider-Man 2” is scheduled to hit theaters in May with Jamie Foxx as the main bad guy, Electro, but there are a few serious foes hanging around in the background, Paul Giamatti as Rhino and Chris Cooper as future Green Goblin, Norman Osborn, included.
When MTV News sat down with Cooper during a press day for “August: Osage County,” he confirmed that Osborn will be hanging back in the upcoming installment with serious potential for evil in the future.
“‘[Amazing] Spider-Man 2’ was an introduction to Norman, and — you’ll see — an extremely odd introduction, which apparently will lead to something more,” Cooper said.
When asked if he was familiar with the concept of the Sinister Six and its potential as the future direction of the series, Cooper said he was “vaguely” aware. “They sent me some material,” he said. “But they said also that this Spider-Man is its own Spider-Man. We’re just kind of starting from the beginning.”
At this point, the formation of the Sinister Six in future “Amazing Spider-Man” movies seems all but confirmed. When MTV News spoke with Paul Giamatti at the Toronto International Film Festival, he intimated that’s where things appeared to be headed.
“And I believe there’s a lot of stage-setting for the next film. There are several villains in this movie, and some of them are more foreground and important. Jamie Foxx is and stuff. A couple of us are more hanging around the background because I think there will be a bigger deal,” he said. “I don’t actually know, but that seems to be what they’re doing. I’m not an idiot either, but I can’t claim hard and fast knowledge of this. I won’t. I can’t because I don’t actually know, but you and I can speculate.”
“The Amazing Spider-Man 2” opens in theatesr on May 2, 2014. The first trailer debuts on December 5.
