‘American Horror Story’ Goes To The Carnival: Here’s What It May Look Like

Coulrophobiacs beware, the fourth season of “American Horror Story” is taking a trip to the carnival.

Writer Douglas Petrie spilled the details in a Nerdist Writer’s Panel podcast Monday (March 17). When initially asked about the setting, Petrie replied, “I can say nothing.” But when another writer asked about the carnival rumors, he confirmed with a “Yes.”

“That’s the idea, that’s very roughly the idea,” Petrie said after the slip-up.

Jessica Lange and Sarah Paulson are the only series regulars confirmed to be involved in the new season. Show creator Ryan Murphy told The Hollywood Reporter that Lange “has always wanted to play a Marlene Dietrich figure,” adding to the speculation of a carnival or circus-themed series. (Dietrich spent much of the end of her long career performing on stage as a cabaret artist in a signature top hat and tails costume.)

One other thing we know for sure is that the season is set to take place in the 1950s. Murphy told Entertainment Weekly, “If you look historically what happened in the year 1950, there’s some more clues in that year. It’s a period piece.”

We can only imagine the macabre surrounding a carnival setting. Freaks, carneys and clowns wouldn’t fail to deliver viewers the spine-tingling horror they crave. In fact, we’re so psyched for what’s to come, we mocked up some visuals our of favorite series regulars in carney garb.
