Let’s be honest: with a cast of gifted ad-libbers that includes Will Ferrell, Steve Carrell, Paul Rudd and Kristen Wigg, it’s not exactly a surprise to hear that one could, ostensibly, remove all the jokes from “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues” and replace them with other, different jokes that are just as funny and a whole lot filthier. But is there anyone in Hollywood crazy enough to perform such a daring surgical procedure on this masterpiece of modern cinema?
Just kidding, of course there is. And the results are not only real, and not only spectacular, but soon to be available for your viewing pleasure in a special one-week theatrical run.
Director Adam McKay spilled the beans to the New York Times about this unprecedented alternate cut of the film, revealing that the new, Frankensteined Anchorman (Franchorman?) would include 763 new jokes; a replacement of about 95% of the original comic material. Forget a blooper reel or extended cut; “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues: Super-Sized R-Rated Version” is basically a whole new movie, coming in at over two hours long and rated R where the original was PG-13.
If you’re wondering what lengths Ron Burgundy and co would have to go to in order to earn that new rating designation, the New York Times has a video that sheds some light on the changes. However, we’re more curious about the part where reporter Michael Cieply alludes to seeing the changes “illustrated with side-by-side jokes” that “were not fit for publication.” Intriguing!
Gratefully, we won’t have to wait long to see the bigger, bawdier “Anchorman 2”; the alternate cut will gets its own shot at the big screen for one week only, starting Friday, February 28.
