Anna Kendrick Is So Happy She Could Sing In First ‘Last Five Years’ Clip

If the first clip from “The Last Five Years” has made one thing clear, it’s that this ish is a musical. It’s not a movie with an amped-up soundtrack, it doesn’t make excuses for characters bursting into song by placing them in the context of performances or daydreams a la “Chicago,” and it’s not shying away from letting us hear its characters sing before we pay for the ticket (“Into the Woods,” we just wanna hear you sing) — it is unflinchingly a musical.

The first clip from the movie is here courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, featuring Anna Kendrick (who’ll be singing a different tune in “Into the Woods” come Christmas) and Jeremy Jordan (“Smash”). We only get to hear Kendrick’s pipes this time around — the stage version of the musical the movie is adapted from has a unique chronology that seems to exclude most duets — but oh, what pipes they are.

Plus, bonus, she’s climbing all over a convertible for no reason that we can really see except that she’s so super in love with Jordan’s face, so. There’s that too. We like it!

“The Last Five Years” debuted over the weekend at Toronto International Film Festival and was acquired by The Weinstein Company. A Valentines Day 2015 release is planned for the movie.
