It looks like Marvel is taking the first steps to filling the void left by Edgar Wright’s abrupt exit from “Ant-Man.” The “World’s End” director left the project (and simultaneously smashed the dreams of nerds everywhere) after Marvel reportedly order a rewrite of the script by Wright and his partner Joe Cornish.
Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios is meeting with directors in hopes of quickly finding a replacement to helm the Paul Rudd-led superhero movie.
The report claims that Adam McKay (“Anchroman”), Ruben Fleischer (“Zombieland”) and Rawson Thurber (“We’re the Millers”) are all meeting with the Disney-owned studio as potential candidates for the job.
THR suggests that McKay could have an advantage because of his previous work with Rudd, but it’s also worth noting that he has the most experience, both in terms of filmmaking and commercial success.
While “Zombieland” was a nice surprise, Fleischer is most recently coming off of the bomb that was “Gangster Squad,” another expensive studio film.
Thurber, on the other hand, has only recently come onto studio radars thanks to “We’re the Millers,” but that movie’s success had more to do with Jennifer Aniston’s choice of underwear than the director’s vision.
Whoever Marvel goes with for “Ant-Man,” it will be interesting to see what movie opens in theaters next summer or whenever it comes out. Will it have any of Wright’s touch after another director takes on the rewritten script? We’ll have to wait and see.
“Ant-Man” is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 17, 2015.
