Christmas has come early for Ariana Grande. After she put her own girly spin on Wham!’s last month, she’s now taking on Eartha Kitt’s signature, flirty “Santa Baby.” It’s the last release off her four-song EP, Christmas Kisses, out Tuesday (December 10).
Grande keeps the track decidedly retro, and doesn’t stray much from the 1953 version recorded by Kitt, where she asks Santa for a number of high-end gifts ranging from plush sables to even a deed to a platinum mine. Oh, you know, just your basic Christmas wish list.
Whereas Grande kicked it solo on her previous Christmas-themed releases, this time, she invited her pal and former “Victorious” co-star Liz Gillies to sing with her on the track. Gilles adds her sultry vocals to Grande’s Mariah Carey-esque style.
The “Baby I” singer is just the latest A-lister to cover the track. It’s been previously covered by everyone from Taylor Swift to the Pussycat Dolls to even pop’s ultimate Material Girl, Madonna. Naya Rivera performed it on “Glee.” And while the song’s lyrics are very feminine, Michael Bublé has even recorded the classic tune.
Which version of “Santa Baby” will you ask Santa for this year?
In addition to “Last Christmas” and “Santa Baby,” Grande also released two original holiday tracks, and all featured on Christmas Kisses.
While Grande covered some of the most famous Christmas songs in pop music, she didn’t even dare to hit the studio to update Carey’s Why? Well, she told MTV News it’s “untouchable.”
