Ariana Grande, Jennette McCurdy Play The ‘Least Ambitious’ Babysitters On ‘Sam & Cat’

Hankering for a fix of former “Victorious” and “iCarly” characters, Sam and Cat? Well, don’t make plans for Saturday night because Ariana Grande and Jennette McCurdy are set to star in a spinoff, “Sam & Cat”, that premieres tonight (June 8) on Nickelodeon at 8 p.m. ET.

When we sat down with them recently, the two stars admitted to MTV News that they feel pretty lucky to have gotten picked to live on as their small-screen personas with this new series.

“It’s fun. It’s really cool. It’s great!” McCurdy said. “It’s flattering that people, I think, responded to our characters so well and that they would want to see us continue on in a show together.”

“iCarly,” which starred McCurdy alongside Miranda Cosgrove, wrapped up a successful six-season run on Nick last November. Meanwhile, “Victorious” ended its own stint on Nick back in February, after four seasons, in which Grande became a popular star along with Victoria Justice. For McCurdy, “it’s really cool” to be able to reprise their roles.

Will Lil Wayne Make A Cameo On ‘Sam & Cat’?

While both ladies can sing, though, they revealed that they won’t belt out any tunes on the show. “Sam and Cat” will play out more like a modern-day spin on classic 70’s sitcoms that put heartwarming friendships and wacky antics at the forefront every week. It follows two young women, with very different personalities, who become roommates and open up a babysitting business.

McCurdy said, “I love ‘Laverne & Shirley,’ old school! [Show creator] Dan Schneider said it was sort of like a younger ‘Laverne & Shirley,’ ‘[The] Odd Couple’-type feel.”

But fans should be warned: Sam and Cat aren’t the best babysitters on the face of the planet. “Neither of us are very responsible. … We’re babysitters, but I don’t think we’re that good to the kids,” Grande joked.

McCurdy agreed, adding, “I feel like they are the least ambitious entrepreneurs of all time. It’s the worst example of babysitting ever. Cat’s intentions are pure, but Sam’s like, ‘I just want the money.’ “
