It may be a holiday flick, but Ashanti was excited about getting into the “bitch” role she plays in “Christmas in the City,” a Lifetime movie airing Saturday night.
“She is a very shady, snide, mean; she doesn’t like kids — kind of a Cruella De Vil, if you’ll say, kind of character,” the singer/actress told MTV News earlier this week. “And it’s weird because she’s so completely opposite from who I am. It was so much fun to play this character because I’ve never done anything like that before, so I had a blast.”
Fans will be happy to discover that although her grumpy retail consultant character doesn’t break into song, they’ll still get to hear her sing a few Christmas melodies during the special.
“Actually, you can hear me sing in the movie. I did four Christmas songs for the film and it worked out really well,” Ashanti confirmed. “With my record label, Written Entertainment, we partnered with Lifetime and they were like, ‘Well, we need some Christmas music for the film.’ So it made so much sense. And I said, ‘You know, we should make a Christmas EP because that all ties everything together.’ “
That EP, A Wonderful Christmas With Ashanti, is now available on iTunes, and the “Foolish” singer expects to drop her album Braveheart at the top of 2014. She plans to open up more and really let fans in on this LP. And fans got another taste of what project will sound like with “I Got It,” which was officially released last week and features Rick Ross.
“I recorded like 60 records and I collab’d with a lot of people and we narrowed it down,” she explained. And I’m just really in a great place because I feel like at this moment I’m kind of taking the fans on my journey and I feel like I’m revealing a little more — definitely a lot more in my records.”
Catch Ashanti in “Christmas in the City,” premiering Saturday, December 7 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Lifetime.
