From being the first openly trans female nominated for an Emmy to landing the cover of TIME Magazine, Laverne Cox is no stranger to transgender milestones.

But before she was the trailblazer we know her as today, Laverne struggled with several aspects of her identity—personal style being a bullet point on that list. There are times when fashion can be fairly inconsequential, but when it’s wrapped up in your ability to express your true self, it can carry significant weight.

“I was terrified of wearing a dress because my third grade teacher Ms. Ridgeway said I would end up in New Orleans wearing a dress,” Laverne told MTV News.

Now, the Orange is the New Black star doesn’t shy away from showing a little leg, but getting there took some time. When we caught up with the actress, who was promoting her new doc The T Word, she walked us through her fashion turning points, including her first dress, pair of heels and weave.

Stephen F. Austin High School went down in the Texas history books when they voted senior Mel Gonzales homecoming king last month, making him the first openly transgender student to wear the crown.

For trans trailblazer Laverne Cox, stories like Gonzales’ are heartwarming. When MTV News caught up with the transgender actress and force behind the October 17 documentary “The T Word”, she shared her thoughts on the newly named king.

“Over the past several years there have been several trans folks who have been named homecoming kings and queens at their high schools and that’s pretty awesome,” the “Orange Is the New Black” star said. “Whenever I hear stories like that it gives me so much hope that there is — that we are creating a world that excepts people as themselves.”

The 17-year-old began hormone replacement therapy during his sophomore year and has since legally changed his name and gender identifier. And his story has echoes in those of the young stars of “The T Word.”

Bea Miller kicks off her leg of the Demi Lovato World Tour, which just kicked off in Chicago. And while Bea’s obviously looking forward to opening for the “Really Don’t Care” singer, she might be even more excited that one of her besties is joining her on the road.

“My friend Maddie is going to be coming with me because it’s Demi’s little sister and she’s like one of my best friends, so I’m not going to be, like, alone. And they always say being a musician is really lonely because you never — when you’re on tour and stuff — you don’t normally have people with you. But Maddie is going to come, so I’m going to have my friend with me, which is really fun,” the “Young Blood” singer told MTV News. “I don’t really ever get to see her that much anymore anyway because I’m always, like, traveling now, and I’m always busy doing stuff. So it’s nice that while I’m busy I get to hang out with her, because that never happens.”

Since taking on the role of prized fighter Nate Kulina in DIRECTV’s new mixed martial arts drama, “Kingdom,” we’ve seen a lot of physical changes from Nick Jonas.

And while many of us were fixated on those killer abs and chiseled chest, we completely overlooked one of the biggest shifts in Nick’s new look: his hair.

“I shaved it because I was shooting ‘Kingdom,’ and I wanted to look different. And I wanted to have a bit of a harder look, and I felt like — and other people felt like — when I have a shaved head that I do look that way, but more menacing. And then it’s just way easier to manage,” the 22-year-old told MTV News.

“We did all the photo shoots and the videos when I had a shaved head, so I was like, ‘I could grow it out, but why not just keep it?’”

Or hate it…

Nick has no plans to grow back his curly locks anytime soon. “Not really, no. I kind of like the shaved head, too,” he said. “I think it suits me.”

It’s easy to forget Bea Miller‘s only 15-years-old. I mean, not only did the former “X Factor” finalist release her debut EP Young Blood earlier this year, but she’s also joining Demi Lovato on her world tour later this month.

Although she’s accomplished a ton at such a young age, in many ways she’s still your typical teenager — especially when it comes to boys.

In Nick Jonas‘ new single “Jealous,” the singer reveals a few things that get him “red in the face.” While the lyrics were written for girlfriend Olivia Culpo (or, more specifically,the guys ogling her), we learned a flatulent fan of Demi Lovato‘s also has him feeling a tad resentful.

“I heard about that,” Nick told MTV News when asked if he’d seen his good friend’s tweet about a gassy meet-and-greet she recently had. “I was going to write her and ask her what happened because that’s probably the best news story I’ve heard about Demi in a long time. Just the fact that that’s news is unbelievable to me.”

While Nick has never been in this particular situation in the past, he isn’t ruling out the idea of recreating the moment with a special someone in the future.

“I can honestly say that getting farted on is, like, is a privilege that I’ve not had with a fan,” he said jokingly. “Maybe someday down the road I’ll get to that point.”

Demi Lovato is a busy woman. Between kicking off the Demi World Tour, launching her own skincare line and lending her vocals to Nick Jonas’ upcoming album, it’s no surprise more than a year has passed since the “Really Don’t Care” singer has released any new music of her own. I mean, when does she even find time to sleep? Seriously.

So when I caught up with the always-going singer earlier this summer, I asked the writing/recording question but was not expecting the following answer:

“I am working on a new album,” she told me (… and then I peed a little). “I think that I’ll be so extremely busy with the world tour it won’t come out for a while but I have started and have worked on some stuff that is really amazing and I can’t wait for people to hear it.”
