5SOS Are Literally Going Bananas For Pete Wentz in This Pic

by 05/20/14

5 Seconds of Summer did way more than make their major network debut on Sunday night at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards.

Watch 5SOS’s Kick Some Ass In The Video For “Don’t Stop.”

Sure, that was epic, but what really blew their minds was meeting one of their all-time musical heroes after the gig: Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz.

But, seriously, what’s up with the bananas, Calum?

Catfish, Dubstep And Selfie Are Now In The Dictionary, So Tell Your Mom To Look It Up

by 05/20/14

“Turducken” is in the Merriam-Webster dictionary now. Turducken.

Don’t know what that is? Look it up, and while you’re at it, instead of trying to explain to your mom what a selfie, hashtag, paywall or freegan is, tell her to check out the 2014 edition of the collegiate dictionary.

Among the 150 other new words that made it into the MW this year: steampunk, Auto-Tune, catfish, crowdfunding, dubstep, baby bump, big data, e-waste, fracking, hot spot, motion capture, paywall, social networking, spoiler alert and unfriend.

The men of MTV’s “Catfish” were very appreciative of the honor, with Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost posting a pic on the Merriam website with their thanks for the recognition — and host Nev Schulman proudly holding up a copy of the new dictionary.

There was even one in the mix that we didn’t know, “Tweep,” a noun that is defined as “a person who uses the Twitter online message service to send and receive tweets.”

Let’s use some of the other new word in a sentence, shall we?

“I’m thinking of grabbing some pho (noun: a soup made of beef or chicken broth and rice noodles) and poutine (noun: a dish of French fries covered with brown gravy and cheese curds) on Sunday when I watch the game with my Yooper (noun: a native or resident of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan — used as a nickname) pals.”

Sorry Christmas, Miley Cyrus Used All The Tinsel At The Billboard Awards

by 05/18/14

When she’s not busy jamming on Beatles classics with her best fwend and Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne, Miley Cyrus has a career of her own to attend to.

On Sunday night (May 18) that meant, well, jamming with her best fwend Coyne on their cover of “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds.” There was glitter, more glitter, and, we’re going to assume an upcoming worldwide shortage of tinsel, since she and Coyne used about 250 pounds of it to make themselves his-and-hers silver and gold shiny outfits.

Beamed in from an overseas stop on her Bangerz tour, the mostly faithful rendition of the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band ballad had Miley singing the rock classic’s lysergic lyrics in her slightly hoarse style, as Coyne joined her on the choruses. That is, when he wasn’t bending down to kiss her bejeweled feet or smashing a crash cymbal with a taped up maraca.

When it was all over, the cameras cut to dad Billy Ray Cyrus, who looked… proud?

The remake of the Beatles classic went on sale as part of the pre-order of the Lips’ upcoming Fab Four covers album.

Lorde Hits The ‘Tennis Court’ In All-Black Everything At Billboard Awards

by 05/18/14

Lorde has been taking some well-earned time off from performing lately due to some health issues, but the New Zealand superstar was back in a big way on Sunday night (May 18) at the Billboard Music Awards for the prime time debut of her new single, “Tennis Court.”

Shedding the fuzzy goth Muppet outfit she came in, the 17 (and a half)-year-old singer switched into yet another all-black-everything ensemble, complete with a giant Zorro hat, for one her patented intense, jittery performances under a forest of disco balls.

With two awards already in hand for the night (Top New Artist, Top Rock Song for “Royals”), Lorde felt free to bust out some of her signature “whut-whut?” arm motions and bring frosty, cool kid vibe to an otherwise poptastic night of over-the-top performances from the likes of a holograhic Michael Jackson, Ariana Grande and 5 Seconds of Summer.

Michael Jackson Hologram At Billboard Awards: Rad Or ‘Bad’?

by 05/18/14

It was the kind of mind-blowing multi-media magic trick that would probably have made Michael Jackson giggle into his jewel-encrusted glove as he hid in the back of the room under a face-shrouding fedora.

Taking his place alongside the iconic Coachella Tupac, MJ was back to life (well, hologramically anyway) at Sunday night’s (May 18) Billboard Music Awards, opening the show by beaming to the stage for a beyond-the-grave performance of the electro dance anthem “Slave to the Rhythm” from his just-released posthumous Xscape album.

The bit began with a troupe of “Aliens”-like commandos in black shiny space suits doing some MJ-style popping and locking as the sound of helicopters blasted the crowd at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas. And when the curtain was raised there was… well, a hologram of a guy who looked (sort of) like Jackson.

Seated on a gilded throne, the HoloMJ sang the song’s hard-edge vocals as live dancers moved alongside him center stage. The effect was, to be honest, a bit weird, but also kind of exciting and a pretty mind-blowing. The moves were all right, down to the moonwalk, copious crotch grabs and shoe tip balancing.

Yeah, it was impressive, but what did the folks at home (and in the room) think?

Who’s Bad?
Before she deleted it, Nicki Minaj had posted a photo of MJ with the word “ALLEGEDLY” written across it as a response to his “performance.”

But others disagreed. #Rad

‘Beatdowns By Solange’ Wins Worst Joke At The 2014 Billboard Music Awards

by 05/18/14

Giving new meaning to the phrase “too soon,” billionaire Dallas Mavericks owner, notorious not-tongue holder and “Shark Tank” investor Mark Cuban set off a bad taste stink bomb at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night (May 18).

Introducing Florida Georgia Line along with fellow Tanker Kevin O’Leary, Cuban joked that he and O’Leary were on hand to announce their latest investment… a $3.2 billion payout for a “hot” new company. “[It's] called ‘Beatdowns by Solange,’” Cuban said. The low-blow joke inspired a momentary stunned silence from the all-star crowd that turned into some audible boos.

“That was a great elevator pitch,” O’Leary added, trying to save the pair from being pelted with Louboutins and $9,500 Prada Ostrich totes.

The joke came just days after Jay Z, Beyoncé and Solange issued a statement on the elevator fight seen ’round the world.

Not cool, dude, not cool.

Christmas Will Never Be The Same After Seth MacFarlane’s Holiday Album

by 05/15/14

He’s conquered TV, the movies and, well, he hosted the Oscars, anyway.

But what Seth MacFarlane really, really wants to do (other than, you know, making tons of vomit jokes) is sing. Sing like Frank Sinatra sang, with a big, brassy band behind him, while wearing a tuxedo and swigging some fine, fine top shelf champagne.

So, as a follow-up to his 2011 big band album, Music is Better Than Words, and his Oscar nomination for “Everybody Needs a Best Friend,” of course the “Cosmos” exec producer is gearing up to release his first Christmas disc. Re-teaming with veteran composer/arranger Joel McNeely, the album will have Seth backed by a 57-piece orchestra on recordings made at the legendary Abbey Road Studios. Hell, Sinatra’s bassist, Chuck Berghoffer, plays on the damn thing!

While the full tracklist hasn’t been released yet, the album promises a mix of classic holiday tunes like “Let it Snow” and a new take on the rare gem “Christmas Dreaming.” He’ll also have some guests, including Norah Jones on “Little Jack Frost Get Lost” and Sara Bareilles on “Baby It’s Cold Outside.”

No release date has been announced yet for the album.

Does Lena Dunham Know Why Jack Antonoff Is Looking For ‘Strange Desire’ On Craigslist?

by 05/15/14

The ad’s subject line might have looked like just another creepy Craigslist come-on: “Artist seeking ‘Strange Desire’ (Brooklyn).”

But it was actually the weirdest press release ever. The post came from Bleachers boss Jack Antonoff, and the Fun. guitarist used it to announce the title and release date of his debut solo album.

“‘Strange Desire‘ is something that came to me a few weeks ago when I was working on the last song i wrote for the Bleachers album,” Antonoff wrote. “The lyric is, ‘Feeling like I never was young I followed a dream and a strange desire.’”

Antonoff said the title of the album, due out on July 15, came to him when he was recording a reference vocal off the top of his head, not realizing until later that the lyric had a much deeper meaning.

“That line speaks to my entire life over the past 14 years of writing and being on tour,” Antonoff explained. “I do feel like I’m constantly mourning a childhood I never had. Mostly because I dealt with a lot of loss in the most formative years of my life. that ties into a lot of the lyrics on the album. Specifically ‘I Wanna Get Better’ – ‘while my friends where getting high and chasing girls down parkway lines I was losing my mind.’ I felt completely freaked out at a moment in life that was supposed to be carefree.”
