Robin Williams’ Old Friend Billy Crystal Delivers Heartbreaking Emmys Tribute

by 1 min ago

The memory of comedian Robin Williams, whose death shocked world earlier this month, loomed large over the annual fete honoring the best and brightest and most beloved in television, the Emmys.

At the awards ceremony Monday night (August 25), a special segment was set aside after the traditional In Memoriam montage, detailing the greats of the medium who passed since last year’s ceremony, for fellow comedian Billy Crystal to share a tribute to Williams.

As a giant photograph of Williams lit up an otherwise darkened stage, Crystal (whose friendship with his Comic Relief co-host spanned more than three decades) described Williams’ infective energy.

“I mean, the brilliance was astounding,” Crystal said. “The relentless energy was kind of … thrilling. I used to think if I could just put a saddle on him and stay on for eight seconds, I was going to do okay.”

He told of Williams coming to family gatherings and casual get-togethers, places out of the public eye where performers always have to be on. He was as funny off-stage as off, Crystal remembered. “He could be funny anywhere.”

Crystal’s speech was followed by a compilation of several late night appearances and stand up clips from Williams, ending with the image of the comedian waving while walking off-stage.

The full text of Crystal’s tribute is below.

What To Expect From The Emmy Awards’ Robin Williams Tribute

by 21 mins ago

The entertainment world continues to mourn the loss of comedian Robin Williams, found dead in his home earlier this month. Tonight, at the 66th Primetime Emmys, Billy Crystal will present a tribute to the late actor.

Crystal and Williams have a friendship spanning more than three decades, from when they met as up-and-coming television actors in the late ’70s. Crystal is the perfect, heart-wrenching choice to memorialize Williams, and we’re already mentally preparing for it.

Though his later career and best known work was in film, Williams got his start in TV. Here are a few small-screen projects we wouldn’t be surprised to see pop up in tonight’s toast to Williams.

“Mork & Mindy”

Williams burst onto the scene as Mork from Ork in “Mork & Mindy” after originating the character in a guest spot on “Happy Days.” He played the beloved alien from 1978 to 1982.

“The Larry Sanders Show”

Williams appeared as himself twice on the sitcom about a fictional talk show. In the clip above, he gets to play a version of himself who gets caught in the middle of show tension.

“Friends

Williams and Crystal cameoed on a 1997 episode of the popular sitcom, “The One With The Ultimate Fighting Champion.” (Spoiler alert, neither Williams nor Crystal are the ultimate fighting champion.) The duo play buddies whose emotional drama intrudes on the titular friends’ coffee shop chat time.

Beyonce Was ***Flawless At The VMAs

by 22 mins ago

While we’re not totally sure she woke up in a bejeweled leotard the morning of the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, there’s no doubt that Beyonce was ***flawless in her performance on at the show on August 24.

The recipient of this year’s Video Vanguard Award, Bey sang and danced her way through a medley of songs from her most recent album, backed by a squadron of dancers and her own enormous legacy. When she wrapped up the mini concert, before we even had a chance to pick our jaws up off the floor, she was joined onstage by husband Jay Z and daughter Blue Ivy. Queen Bey’s family presented her with the statue for the special award, bringing Bey — and all of us, just admit it — to tears.

Bow down, then check out this supercut of Beyonce being ***flawless at this year’s VMAs.

If there’s one thing we know for sure, it’s that the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards got back.

Last night’s awards show featured breathtaking performances, emotional acceptance speeches and jaw-dropping fashion, but most of all, it featured a whole lotta booty. Bootylicious “Anaconda” singer Nicki Minaj performed three times, which certainly didn’t hurt the bounty of booty, but everyone including Jim Carrey, Fifth Harmony and more got in on the booty-popping action.

In short: Oh my God, Becky, look at this compilation of all the best booty moments from last night’s VMAs.

Katy Perry Will Unveil Her Best Impression On The VMA Carpet

by 21 mins ago

As if there wasn’t enough to be excited about for tonight’s 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, Katy Perry just teased another surprise.

Apparently, we’re going to be treated to Perry’s very best impression on the red carpet, due to her being challenged by one Britney Jean Spears.

See, we were recently treated to Spears’ scarily spot-on Woody Woodpecker impression.

Perry, of course, loved it, as she should, tweeting that it was the best thing she’d seen all day.

In response, Spears challenged Perry to showcase an impression of her own, a challenge that Perry promptly accepted with a promise to debut her act on tonight’s red carpet.

So, what’ll it be? Might the “Dark Horse” singer do her best hungry big cat (Tony the Tiger, duh)? Could she possibly have a sweet Daffy Duck up her sleeve? Maybe she’ll go the non-cartoon route and pull out an impression of this year’s Video Vanguard Award recipient, Beyonce.

Whatever it is (but please let it be Beyonce), we can’t wait to see it.

Taylor Swift Has Sparkles And A Secret In Store For VMA Performance

by 5 mins ago

The big day of the VMAs is finally here, and we can’t wait to see what Lady Taylor of the Swift has in store for us. Yes, Taylor Swift will be performing at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, and a Twitter tease this afternoon has us intrigued, excited and — we’ll admit — a little confused.

OK, the sparkly mic we get and love. Hey, 1989! That’s the name of Swift’s upcoming album! Awesome! We’re totally on the same page here.

Sparkly shoes? Check. We approve, and we totally get it. Yeah, girl, you’ll be needing those for tonight’s sure to be amazing show.

It’s that last part that’s leaving us scratching our heads. See, that link that comes after “you will need this” is to Swift’s iTunes page. Since we’ve clearly downloaded (and memorized and choreographed a dance to) “Shake It Off” already, what could she possibly be pointing us to? Could it be that there’ll be something new for us to download post-performance? Please say yes, please!

‘Sons Of Anarchy’: Here’s How Many People Will Die This Season

by 40 mins ago

It’s just over two weeks until the final season of “Sons of Anarchy” premieres, and we just can’t stop revving our engines. Now, we here at MTV News have already seen — and shared a few observations from — the season seven premiere, and we know when it will end (December 2, keep on it), but now we actually know how many characters will meet their ends.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, show creator Kurt Sutter shared how many people he’s planning on killing off on the ultra-violent show this season.

“Two club members will be dead,” Sutter said. “I don’t think there will be more than that.”

Oh, that seems…surprisingly low!

In the season premiere, Jax (Charlie Hunnam) tells his motorcycle riding bros that he expects them to lay their lives on the line (even if Sutton doesn’t plan on making that necessary).

“For me to move forward with all the things we now have to do, I need to know this table has no doubts, no mistrust, that every single one of you would kill or die for the man next to him,” Jax says.

Maybe if there’s less dying, it means more killing? We’ll just have to see.

“Sons of Anarchy” returns on FX September 9.

Floyd Mayweather One-Ups 50′s Reading Challenge

by 7 mins ago

So it took him a bit longer to respond to 50 Cent’s challenge, but boxer Floyd Mayweather has given a roundabout nod to the rapper’s throwing of the gauntlet.

For those of you just joining us, 50 Cent taunted Mayweather on Thursday with an Instagram video daring him to submit video of him reading, “a full page out of a ‘Harry Potter’ book out loud without starting and stopping or f–-king up.” In return, 50 would donate $750,000 to the charity of Mayweather’s choice.

Well, Mayweather didn’t post a video, but he did toss up a pic demonstrating his math skills:

“Read this $72,276,000.00. God bless,” he captioned the snap.

Oh, boy. This really escalated quickly.

26 Reasons Emma Stone Is Stone Cold Awesome

by 6 mins ago

We know it’s called “The Amazing Spider-Man,” but in all honesty, we think that the totally amazing part of those movies was Emma Stone.

The actress is our hypothetical best friend, quotable, cute and personable. Has she ever done anything wrong? Probably not!

Ahead, 26 reasons we are totally obsessed with Emma Stone.

1. She taught Woody Allen how to text

Yes, she’s so powerful and charming that she even got an avowed luddite to use a touchscreen. Emma! UR kewl!

2. She’s a psychic.

Whatever, just go with it.

3. She’s not afraid to call out sexism, even when it’s coming from her boyfriend.

At a Q&A, when Andrew Garfield called sewing “feminine,” Stone stopped him cold. “Feminine how?”

4. She can make Colin Firth blush.

And she live-texts like a pro.

5. Her real name isn’t Emma, but she totally owns it.

Buh…wuh…Emily?

6. She loves puns.

In a Vogue profile in which she visits Build-A-Bear with the writer, she drops both “exhi-bear-tionism” and “bear-ing all.”

7. When she hides her face from cameras, she’s doing it for charity.

Remember that time that she and Andrew Garfield just melted your heart with goodness?

Kristen Bell Surprises Fans At ‘Frozen’ Sing Along Screening

by 4 mins ago

“Frozen” may have come out the better part of a year ago, but guess what — we’re still not ready to let it go.

Neither, it would seem, is star Kristen Bell. The actress, who voiced the part of flame-haired Princess Anna, surprised fans at a special sing-along screening of the blockbuster animated Disney musical at the El Capitan theater in Los Angeles last night.

The actress introduced the screening to the delight of fans, as captured by Entertainment Weekly in the Instagram above and Disney’s Bruce Wright on Twitter.

Of course, it doesn’t come with your very own walking, talking, sloth-loving Bell, but come November 18, everyone will be able to sing along with “Frozen” at home (with accurate lyrics, thanks to a running karaoke-style subtitle) when a special edition DVD is released.

We’re just wondering why we still haven’t seen Olaf in the flesh. Summer’s tough for snowmen, we guess.
