Cory’s Still A ‘Sweet Nerd’ On ‘Girl Meets World’

by 29 mins ago

Don’t worry, “Boy Meets World” fans: A decade and a half later, Cory Matthews is still “a sweet nerd.”

Mr. Matthews himself, Ben Savage, stopped by MTV News headquarters ahead of tonight’s premiere of the new sitcom “Girl Meets World” to chat about what his character has been up to in the 14 years since “Boy Meets World” took its final bow.

Savage, of course, spent seven seasons playing the adorkable (it’s in the dictionary now, we can use it to describe non-Deschanels) Cory, whose trials and triumphs and cute awkward kisses with Topanga (Danielle Fishel) we remember fondly. Cory — and now-wife Topanga and tween daughter Riley — are back in “Girl Meets World.”

Savage said that he didn’t re-watch “Boy” in preparation for the new series, in which he plays the history teacher of his daughter’s class.

“I didn’t because this show is a different entity than ‘Boy Meets World,’ and it takes place 14 years later,” he said. “It’s not the Cory Matthews that we left off in 2000.”

Don’t expect a total character makeover though: “He’s still neurotic, he’s still sweet, he’s still sort of funny — or at least thinks he is — he still likes cake a lot and he’s still kind of a nerd, but a sweet nerd. He’s kind of different, but the same.”

Just as familiar as Cory’s quirks are some of the characters who will pop up in “Girl Meets World.” Minkus, where have you been!

“Girl Meets World” premieres tonight on the Disney Channel.

Johnny Depp Is Gonna Make A Chinese Reality TV Wannabe’s Dreams Come True

by 11 mins ago

Your mom thinks you’re a winner no matter what, and that’s nice, but if Johnny Depp thinks you’re a winner, it could change your life.

On Friday, Depp will act as judge on the Chinese reality TV show “Chinese Dream.” Contestants explain their dreams of stardom and give live performances, and audience voting determines which contestant, referred to as the “dreamer,” goes on to the next round.

Depp will decide the final winner, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The prize: Being whisked away to Los Angeles to live out their dreams in Hollywood, under Depp’s mentorship.

The actor, whose name is by this point nearly synonymous with fame and leading man-dom, said that he wanted to help ordinary people realize their dreams after he grew up wanting to be a rock star. Acting, he said, was a way to pay the bills.

It’s done much more than pay the bills for him, as we’ve seen from commercial successes such as the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise and more, Depp’s doing pretty alright for himself.

So, what do you say? Do you dream of Depp, or will Depp help you find your dreams.

Jenny Slate Has The Perfect Answer To The Feminism Question

by 27 mins ago

When it comes to feminism, “Obvious Child” star, actress and “Saturday Night Live” alumna doesn’t hesitate to add her name to the list.

“Am I a feminist? F–k yeah, I’m a feminist,” she said in a recent sit-down with MTV News. “I think that unfortunately people who are maybe threatened by feminism think that it’s about setting your bra on fire and being aggressive, and I think that’s really wrong and really dangerous.”

Slate, whose latest movie follows her stand-up comedian character as she meets a guy, has an unplanned pregnancy and deals with the consequences of that, agreed that her movie is a feminist work, and offered strong advice about how to change the male-skewed gender gap in Hollywood.

Check out the interview clip to hear Slate’s thoughts on feminism and how to make the world a friendlier place for female filmmakers.

Yes, There’s Going To Be A ‘Marcel The Shell’ Movie. And It Will Have Songs In It.

by 15 mins ago

Commence freakout: There are plans to make a “Marcel the Shell (With Shoes On)” feature-length movie, and it’s going to have songs in it.

That’s right: Marcel’s gonna sing some sweet tunes.

Jenny Slate, the creator and teeny tiny voice of the fan favorite stop-motion short films chronicling the trials and triumphs of an anthropomorphized shell and his very small shoes, recently caught up with MTV News in New York City.

She was doing the press rounds for her new movie “Obvious Child,” a very funny and very true-to-life take on a young stand-up comedian who gets pregnant after a chance meeting that turns into a delightful, drunken evening. Of course, being one of Marcel’s many fans, I couldn’t be in a room without asking Slate to do Marcel’s signature squeaky voice at least once.

And, apparently, Slate couldn’t leave the room without not only reciting famous movie lines (watch out, “Jurassic Park,” you’ve been Marcel-ified), but also sharing a detailed version of how she came up with Marcel’s voice, and plans for a feature-length movie with songs in it.

Yes. A movie. A whole movie.

Oh, and she also performs a soulful rendition of “My Mother Got Lost In A Rug,” a Marcel original about — well, you can guess.

Check out the interview above for the whole scoop, and check out “Obvious Child,” in theaters now.

Oh, S–t! That Guy Just Bit Another Guy In A World Cup Game!

by 30 mins ago

Drop everything, a dude just totally bit another dude in a World Cup game.

Uruguay’s Luis Suarez broke that cardinal preschool rule: We don’t bite. Toward the end of Uruguay’s final game of the first group in the World Cup, Suarez charged Chiellini and got a good piece of his shoulder, then both of them fell to the ground.

Suarez was not shown a card or penalized. Minutes later, Uruguay scored a goal to beat Italy 1-0 and advance to the next round.

Suarez came out of the collision holding his mouth in apparent pain, while an outraged Chiellini peeled down the shoulder of his jersey to reveal indentations from Suarez’s teeth.

As it turns out, Suarez has a history of biting. In April 2013, he was suspended for 10 games while playing for Liverpool following biting a Chelsea player in the Premiere League.

In 2011, he earned a seven-game suspension for yet another biting incident, as well as the nickname “the cannibal of Ajax.” Um, what?

Welcome to the earth, everyone, where we straight up bite people in the middle of soccer games.

New ‘The Purge: Anarchy’ Trailer Will Freak You Out

by 27 mins ago

We can’t imagine anything much more anarchic than “The Purge,” a movie in which the laws are suspended for 24 hours and Ethan Hawke tries desperately to survive the night. Like, we thought that was the actual definition of anarchy — lawlessness — but now that we’ve seen the new trailer for sequel “The Purge: Anarchy,” we know what anarchy really means.

It means Frank Grillo, Kiele Sanchez and Zach Gilford running (literally) for their garsh darn lives while (literal) anarchy reigns. They’re somehow kidnapped, along with several other friends, and their lives are sold to the highest bidder as a bougie crowd watches them try to survive the night on the street.

Um, hello nightmares. Welcome. Stay a while. Don’t mind us while we sleep with the lights on and the windows tightly closed.

“The Purge: Anarchy” hits theaters July 18.

Karaoke King Robert Pattinson Shares His Advice For Crooners

by 18 mins ago

With reporting by Josh Horowitz.

For a guy who’s made headlines by singing karaoke with both Katy Perry and The Wolverine, Robert Pattinson certainly doesn’t own up to doing a lot of karaoke.

“I think I’ve only ever done karaoke like three times,” the erstwhile “Twilight” star told MTV News.

Yes, when asked for advice for would-be kings of the croon, Pattinson, the man whose voice Hugh Jackman once described as “soulful,” came up somewhat short.

“Go for something outside of your wheelho– I don’t know,” he said, coming up short.

To see what Pattinson digs up for advice, and to hear about his best karaoke experience ever, check out the clip above.

Pattinson’s new movie, “The Rover,” is in theaters now.

We Wrote Some Hunky Haikus About ’22 Jump Street’

by 06/13/14

Some things are just so beautiful that there’s only one way to talk about them: In disciplined verse. You know what’s so beautiful?

Channing Tatum, for one.

Laughter is also a beautiful thing. As it so happens, there’s something coming up that involves both the very pleasant looking Tatum and the gift to the world that is a good belly laugh.

That’s right, we’re about to get real poetic about “22 Jump Street.” Handle it.

We’re sure that the Japanese poets of yesteryear never imagined that their regimented triplet form of poetry, the 5-7-5 pattern, would be used to gush about shirtless dudes, explosions, parkour and making out with Ice Cube’s daughter, but we like to think that somewhere out there, they’re nodding in approval.

Without further ado, please enjoy our very special “22 Jump Street” haikus, starring Tatum and Dave Franco. (He may be in prison, but he’s still handsome.)

See What ‘Doctor Who’ Would Look Like As A Disney Movie

by 06/12/14

It’s everything you never knew you wanted: Artist Stephen Byrne has created the poster for a Disney-fied version of “Doctor Who.”

doctorwhodisneyStephen Byrne/Facebook

With the cheeseball and oh-so-Disney princess tagline, “She wished for a prince. She got 13,” the poster depicts a bemused-looking Amy Pond, surrounded by all 13 Doctors. The gang, including the TARDIS, of course, is all there.

Byrne’s goof on the popular BBC series has attracted the praise of some, and the ire of other fans. Byrne’s Facebook post of the art has garnered 200 comments as of publication, and had more than 1,300 shares.

What do you think? Yay or nay to a Disney Doctor?
