Katniss Plus ‘The Dark Knight’ Equals These Awesome Batniss Posters

by 9 mins ago

It’s a crossover so perfect, we can’t believe we didn’t think of it ourselves: “The Hunger Games” and Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight.”

Think about it: they’re both dark stories about a reluctant hero, tasked with saving their people. Both Batman and Katniss are sometimes framed as vigilantes or enemies to the people, and, hey, they both are represented by winged animals, but neither of them have actual wings on their bodies. Separated at birth? Maybe!

The Quarter Quell thinks so, as Effie Trinket herself, Elizabeth Banks, noticed.

Fansite QuarterQuellOrg made these fantastic posters for a crossover between the two, which Banks charmingly referred to as “Batniss.” We dig ‘em.

“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1″ hits theaters November 21, and we don’t know if “The Dark Katniss Rises” will ever be real, but we’d totally watch it if it was.

What do a Long Island bartender, a snowboarding star, a singer/songwriter, a pole fitness aficionado and a track star have in common? They’re all competing in MTV’s “Million Dollar Maze Runner” this Sunday, doing their best to win a million dollars and a brand new Scion.

Nobody knows what awaits our competitors in the maze, but we do know that this contest is going to be awesome. Four teams of two, one male and female on each, will enter the maze and see who comes out victorious, as “The Maze Runner” star Dylan O’Brien announced at the 2014 Video Music Awards.

We can hardly wait for this weekend’s showdown, so it’s time to meet our competitors.

First, let’s get familiar with the girls and the guys competing, because who doesn’t like a classic battle of the sexes.

What Does Nicki Minaj’s Cryptic Channing Tatum Instagram MEAN?

by 8 mins ago

Uh, pardon us, but we’re very confused here. In fact, the only emotion we may be feeling more strongly than confused is intrigued.

Nicki Minaj today (September 11) popped a pic on Instagram of her waving a lil wassup to Noted Handsome Man Channing Tatum. That’s normal, we’d wave at him too. (Actually, false, we’d turn sheet white and do our best statue impressions and then start screaming as soon as we were out of his eyeline.)

So it’s not so much the pic that has us flipping out as her caption: “Oh hi Channing. See u on set of our new movie,” followed by a winking, tongue-out emoji.

Um, WHAT?

There are several possibilities here:
1. Nicki Minaj is actually in a movie with Channing Tatum
Maybe it is what it is. Could Minaj be appearing in “Magic Mike XXL,” the sequel to Tatum’s stripper movie that put “Pony” right back at the top of our Spotify playlists? It could happen. Minaj had a turn in “The Other Woman” earlier this year, so maybe she’s not done with the silver screen.

2. She’s messing with us
Nobody knows the power of suggestive social media better than Ms. Minaj. She could be rubbing her hands together, happily watching us freak the eff out in the time since she posted the pic.

3. She has something in her eye and is subtly trying to get C-Tates to help her out.
Maybe that emoji was less of a wink and more of an “OMG, my eye! Please help! ...

2014′s Summer Movies By The Numbers

by 27 mins ago

Design by Amelia Rossi and Natasha Taylor

Summer may not be officially over (we know, we know, fall doesn’t technically start until September 23, we know), but it’s time to face the music: the summer movie season is effectively ended.

Yes, we’ve had our fill of this year’s big-budget, warm weather masterpieces, and they’ve certainly had their fill of us, with a whopping 13 titles raking in more than $100 million at the box office between early May (like we said, movie seasons play by different rules than the equinox) and Labor Day weekend.

We’ve gathered all the data you’ll need about the summer’s biggest hits, from box office take, height of the leading dude or lady, and even whether the movie passes the Bechdel Test. Check out the infographic below, created by Amelia Rossi and Natasha Taylor.

President Snow Gives Us The Heebie Jeebies In New ‘The Hunger Games’ Teaser

by 2 mins ago

Just when we were calming ourselves down after seeing that ultra-badass poster of Katniss in full Mockingjay battle dress earlier today, we get yet another surprise from “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1.”

We get the very briefest of teases today, along with the announcement that the first full trailer for the movie will hit in just five short days. We’ll just give you a little space to freak out here:

[...]

Done? No? Well, we’re moving on anyway.

In the glimpse of footage we get, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) picks up a white rose — President Snow’s calling card — and looks like she’s had the bejeezus scared out of her. As well she should, because as an unseen Snow (Donald Sutherland) narrates, “It’s the things we love most that destroy us.”

Ahhhhhhhhhh!

We’ve already seen a one-minute teaser for the film this summer, and we’re now literally counting down the days until we get to see even more of Katniss’ fight for Panem.

“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1″ hits theaters November 21.

110 Movies That Are Impossible To Google

by 13 mins ago

Making it big in Hollywood is a tricky business. Actors have to have the right combination of looks, talent and luck; directors have to have an aesthetic, authority and luck; producers have to have smarts, a budget and luck, the list goes on.

Luck also, apparently, factors into the naming of films themselves. Because looking at this list of more than 100 movie titles, it would appear that the screenwriter, greenlighter or whoever was in charge of picking the title that would go at the top of the movie poster looked at whatever written material was closest to them, jabbed their finger down, named the movie after the word closest and hoped for the best.

Yes, many of the most successful movies are totally ungoogleable. Did you mean “Michael” the movie, or your friend Mike? Looking for a history lesson about the Titanic, or Kate and Leo? “Her” or her? Don’t even get us started on the very dangerous search term “Sex Tape.” One-word, vague movie titles are inescapable (four of the top 10 all-time highest grossing movies have one-word titles), common first names are top picks for movie titles (“Jack”? Guess what the main character’s name is. Just guess.”) and everything, if you stare at it long enough, just starts to look like found poetry.

We’ve divided our 110 favorite ungoogleable movie titles into four categories — names, places, nouns and concepts/adjectives/pronouns — for ease of viewing so you can see just how dazzling the world can be.

Lena Dunham, Amy Poehler, And Your New Favorite Webseries Are Coming To A Book Store Near You

by 16 mins ago

It’s a great time to be a sassy literary lady out here in the world. The Tina Feys, Mindy Kalings and Caitlin Morans of the world have kept us busy and laughing for the past whatever, and we’re grateful to them for it. But we’ve read and re-read “Bossy Pants,” and now we can assure Mindy that, yes, we are all hanging out without her (but only because we don’t know how to get her to be our best friend and hang out with us already).

Luckily for you, sassy literary lady (or dude), there are several books in the same vein being released over coming months, enough for you to start a book club of like-minded individuals and get reading through the end of the year.

What are you waiting for? Time to turn some pages.

October: “Not That Kind of Girl,” Lena Dunham

dunhambook

The “Girls” mastermind’s first book, a collection of non-fiction essays, will be released Sept. 30, making it the perfect selection for a late October gathering. Though Dunham disclaims that she’s “not a sexpert, a psychologist or a dietician,” we’ll gladly read what she has to say about any of those topics anyway.

Available for pre-order now.

November: “Yes, Please,” Amy Poehler

poehlerbook

There’s a reason Amy Poehler was on “Saturday Night Live” for the better part of a decade and has successfully led her sitcom, “Parks and Recreation,” to five seasons: she knows what she’s doing when it comes to coming up ...

‘Scandal’: Watch Olivia Commune With A Glass Of Red Wine In New Promo

by 5 mins ago

“Where in the world is Olivia Pope?” the title cards of this agonizingly short first look at the fourth season of “Scandal” asks.

Yes, the infamous Olivia (Kerry Washington) jetted off to parts unknown in the season three closer with Jake (Scott Foley) in tow (#teamjake, for the record). Unfortunately, those parts remain mostly unknown.

We see a stonefaced Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) dialing the phone and the ringtone echoing through the halls of Olivia’s apartment and the apparently shuttered Pope and Associates offices. No burner phone can save you this time, Mr. President.

All we know is Olivia is on a beach somewhere, drinking terribly seasonally-inappropriate (or at least geographically-inappropriate) red wine. That’s literally all we know: girlfriend is wearing sunglasses and drinking red wine. We assume she’s also wearing a flawless white one-piece, because Olivia even looks conspicuously fabulous even while going incognito, but Shonda Rhimes loves making us suffer and only gave us the briefest of 30 second glimpses. Guhhhhh.

“Scandal” returns September 25 at 9 p.m. with a season premiere entitled “Randy, Red, Superfreak and Julia.” ABC summarizes the episode thusly:

“Nearly two months after Olivia and Jake boarded a private jet to stand in the sun together, everything has changed. With another four years in the White House, Fitz and Cyrus are doing everything they can to make a positive impact on the nation. Meanwhile, Mellie struggles to cope with the loss of her son and the gladiators feel the impact of Olivia’s absence.”

Silent screaming. Can’t wait. Won’t ...
